Job Overview:
Under direction from NYRA Fire Inspector (Chief) or Assistant Chief, The Fire Marshal is responsible for ensuring full compliance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and New York State Building Codes as they pertain to fire safety. Under the direction of NYRA Fire Inspector (Chief) or Assistant Chief, the Fire Marshal works to prevent and suppress fires, perform Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) emergency service work, and respond to emergency situations—exercising judgment and initiative to control and resolve incidents. The primary goal of this position is to prevent and minimize injury, loss of life, and property damage in all emergency situations at NYRA facilities.
Essential Functions:
- Fire Prevention & Inspections:
- Conduct fire prevention activities and perform regular inspections of barns, grandstands, dormitories, and all NYRA facilities.
- Inspect and maintain firefighting and medical equipment provided by NYRA.
- Ensure all fire extinguishers, exit signage, and emergency lighting are inspected monthly and in working order.
- Perform semi-annual inspections of fire hydrants and sprinkler connections throughout NYRA property.
- Identify and correct egress barriers and mitigate fire hazards.
- Emergency Management & Response:
- Implement Emergency Incident Action and Evacuation Plans.
- Respond to fire alarm activations and emergency medical calls.
- Provide direct emergency response, including administering emergency medical care if certified as an Emergency Medical Technician.
- Assist certified EMT personnel during medical calls if not EMT certified.
- Direct and assist patrons and employees during emergency evacuations.
- Address and resolve daily emergencies and non-emergency situations.
- Compliance & Reporting:
- Enforce NYRA Fire Safety Rules, Regulations, and Procedures.
- Prepare and submit records and reports detailing inspections, emergency responses, and equipment maintenance.
- Issue violations as necessary for non-compliance.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- High School Diploma or GED required (Minimum).
- Associates degree in Fire Science or related field (Preferred).
- Experience:
- 3 years of experience as a professional firefighter working for a career department, or
- 7 years of experience as a volunteer firefighter.
- Experience in handling large crowds and de-escalating stressful situations.
- Prior experience with a career or volunteer Fire Department.
- Experience in Basic Life Support (BLS) methods and procedures.
- 3 years of experience as a professional firefighter working for a career department, or
- Other (Certifications):
- Must meet NFPA 1001 standards (or New York State equivalent) for fire safety professionals.
- Current CPR-AED certification.
- NYS Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification is required to provide medical care; if not EMT certified, candidates must assist EMT personnel.
- ICS 100, 700, and 800 course completion.
- Valid NYS Driver License.
- Must obtain a current NYS gaming license before employment and the candidate is responsible for ensuring payment of the associated fee
- Must meet NFPA 1001 standards (or New York State equivalent) for fire safety professionals.
Summary of Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- Must be able to work in all weather conditions and quickly respond to emergencies.
- Adaptability to dynamic racing schedules, including weekends and holidays.
- Comfortability working in large crowd venues.
- Ability to stand, walk, and climb stairs for extended periods.
- This position requires being on site in Saratoga, you must not have a fear of horses
- During emergencies, the ability to run, climb, and jump as well as lift, carry, push, and/or pull objects, materials and/or people weighing from 20-150 pounds.
Pay Range / Salary: $19.06
