Job Overview:

Observes and times racehorses during pre-race workouts to obtain speed information. Identifies each horse by name, color, and records information. Observes horse during workout and assigns speed rating according to effort extended by horse and rider, distance run, and time required as measured by stopwatch. Records information and submits it to Racing Secretary’s Office.

Essential Functions:

- Keeps a list each horse’s name, distance, time, manner in which the workout was accomplished, condition of the racing surface, and any other information deemed appropriate
- Clocks horses during pre-race workouts
- Identifies each horse by its name verifying colors and identifying marks
- Notes type of workout, distance, trainer’s name, race conditions, and workout time
- Submits information to Gap Attendants to be recorded with racing office and given to trainer
- Informs Clockers Supervisor of any discrepancies, if unable to identify a horse, and all other important matters

Qualifications:

Educational Level Required: High school diploma or GED

Minimum Years and Kind of Work Experience Required: 3-5 years experience in horse racing, preferably in gap attendant, #’s clerk, Tabwriter positions.

Other Requirements: Experience timing sporting events or other fast-paced activities.

Summary of Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

Stress related to accurately timing several horses simultaneously. A workout cannot be re-created and times cannot be estimated or made up.

Pay Range / Salary:  $21.22 per hour
