Department Summary

The College of Health and Public Service (HPS) at the University of North Texas, distinguished as one of the few Tier One research universities designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), prepares graduates to address diverse and complex social issues such as aging, disability, disaster management and recovery, criminal justice, health disparities, and public safety, and find solutions to challenges in public administration, public health, and urban design. We have seven academic departments with undergraduate and graduate programs, the Center for Public Management, the UNT Speech and Hearing Center, UNT WISE and a number of professional development and clinical training programs to facilitate careers to address a global society.

HPS students are trained to lead nonprofits, become educators, researchers and professionals who strengthen the diverse communities we serve, with thoughtful, inclusive, and equitable practices as audiologists, behavior analysts, city managers, emergency managers, health care administrators, public safety administrators, public health specialists, rehabilitation counselors, speech language pathologists, social workers, urban planners, and more.

Position Overview

The Health and Public Service Academic Counselor is responsible for providing guidance to students by appraising their interests, aptitudes, and abilities to guide students toward optimal degree fit. They connect students with available resources for academic success and personal/professional development. This position is responsible for implementing programs related to student success and retention.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's Degree and two years' of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
  • Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory.
  • Strong presentation, problem solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong counseling skills including career development and group facilitation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Remains active in professional development.

Job Duties:

  • Provide students with individual and group counseling in matters related to academic, career, and personal success.
  • Serve as primary contact person for identified programs, degree plans, and projects within HPS.
  • Develop strategic recruitment, retention and degree completion initiatives.
  • Provide leadership in development and implementation of new student orientation.
  • Develop, update, and maintain systems for data collection and tracking student progress. Conduct program evaluations.
  • Evaluate transfer credit hours and prior UNT hours for applicability to degree programs according to established criteria. Advise prospective students regarding program requirements and individual inquiries.
  • Review graduation application materials for accuracy and completeness. As well, advise students regarding any problems detected in graduation materials and assist with undergraduate commencement ceremony.
  • Maintain working familiarity with relevant university, college, and program policies, procedures, and forms. Maintain mastery of authorized EIS data bases and other computer information systems required to perform above described job duties.
  • Promote good will within the office and with students; be cooperative with other office personnel. Maintain professional attitudes and demeanor in performing job duties. Greet visitors and students in a friendly, cooperative and helpful manner.
  • Attendance, punctuality, productivity as required and adherence to professional office attire in accordance with University and office policies and procedures. Follow all other university policy, procedures, and duties as assigned.

Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm with some flexibility for events
