Department Summary

Founded in 1977, the mission of IELI at UNT is to provide the highest quality academic English instruction, student services, and professional development programs for its students. IELI has helped thousands of students achieve English mastery for degree study at the UNT and other universities, as well as providing extensive English Training programs internationally in China, Japan, Thailand, and Türkiye. Since 2014, IELI has run an intensive English program for Kansai Gaidai University (KGU), in Hirakata, Osaka, Japan.

UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. We welcome candidates who have experience with HSI/MSIs and/or who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin and other variations), Arabic, Tagalog, Farsi, French, or/and Yoruba.

Position Overview

This ESL Instructor role requires candidates to currently live in Japan, relocate to Hirakata City Osaka, hold a work visa, and hold a US passport at the time of appointment. The ESL Instructor position is an onsite, full-time appointment that requires a minimum workweek of forty (40) hours per week to include, but not limited to the following duties:

• Teaching assigned classes according to IELI established curriculum, policies, procedures, and schedule of fifteen to eighteen contact hours weekly classes in the College of International Professional Development (CIPD) program
• Lesson preparation, coordination with other ESL instructors, and grading for assigned classes
• Office hours of at least three hours weekly
• Curriculum work such as course development, syllabus-writing, materials development, file development, book evaluation and selection, test development, attendance at curriculum meetings, and other appropriate curriculum activities
• Ad hoc committee work.
• Attendance at all regularly scheduled and special IELI meetings, training sessions, course conferences at the end of the semester, and any required pre-term assignments and meetings
• Participation in a variety of KGU activities
• Administrative work such as assistance with IELI entrance, placement, and exit testing, class assignment activities, record keeping, mid-term and final marking and grade report production, student absence reporting, and other required paperwork
• Participation in appropriate training and activities for continued professional growth and development
• Participation in KGU study abroad screening activities and mini lessons/information sessions about the Program for high school students and during KGU Open Campus events
• Adaption to current KGU teaching requirements whether in-classroom, remote online, and/or as a hybrid model
• Timely completion of required UNT and/or International Affairs training modules

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degreee in TESOL or closely related field. Two years teaching English for Academic Purposes in oral & writing skills at an IEP. Fluency and mastery in English. Successful experience adapting classroom content to better serve student needs.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of a second language.
Experience teaching in U.S. campus-based IEP.

If needed, additional references can be added after the application has been submitted. This faculty position is onsite, located in Osaka, Japan on the Kansai Gaidai University campus and requires relocation to Hirakata, Osaka, Japan to rent-free, on-campus apartment.
