Department Summary

UNT Health Institutional Advancement seeks to advance UNT Health’s mission to create solutions for a healthier community. Through fund development, community education and alumni relations, our goal is to build meaningful relationships that expand opportunities for our students, faculty and programs in ways that transform countless lives.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Director of Finance and Donor Stewardship, the Business Manager has full responsibility for the day-to-day financial operations of Institutional Advancement and UNT Health Foundation. The Business Manager will support month-end, quarterly, and annual close processes across multiple fund types (operating, designated, gift, and private grant), prepare journal entries, conduct complex financial analyses, and ensure the accuracy of financial statement line items. Responsibilities also include developing annual operating budgets, forecasting, requisitions, accounts payable, accounts receivable, preparing financial reports for leadership, and strengthening internal controls, policies, and procedures. The position will manage the foundation’s annual audit preparation and other day-to-day functions of accounting services.

The Business Manager will serve as liaison to UNT System and UNT Health budget and finance offices and the UNT Health Foundation board of directors. The Business Manager must be able to set their own priorities to meet business demands, make decisions autonomously, and work collaboratively with all stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of accepted accounting practices, budget and audit accounting, legal statutes, policy and procedure affecting financial record keeping.
  • Ability to work at a high level of productivity, with numerical accurately and consistently and perform accounting operations legibly.
  • Ability to analyze, consolidate, and present accounting data in clear concise form.
  • Take initiative in independent planning, organizing, and performing work assignments within broadly defined parameters.
  • Ability to work with highly sensitive and confidential information exercising sound judgment and discretion, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepting Accounting Principles (GAAP) and familiarity with standards specific to nonprofit or higher education accounting.
  • A comprehensive understanding of accounting as a functional area and demonstrated experience with general ledger management, preparing journal entries and statement of account reconciliations.
  • Ability to understand fund management databases, due-to/due-from accounting, and fund balances.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (can perform complex functions in Excel), experience with financial spreadsheets and related software.
  • Experience handling sensitive and confidential information with integrity, ethical, and professional standards
    Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
  • Master’s degree in accounting or related field.
  • Experience with Blackbaud’s Financial Edge accounting software and EverTrue Balance (Fundriver) endowment management software.

Job Duties

  • Performs all accounting functions for Institutional Advancement and UNT Health Foundation as well as various business office day-to-day duties.
  • Prepares and processes all journal entries, interdepartmental transfers, and complex general ledger reconciliations and financial analyses for revenues and operating expenses across multiple fund types. Responsible for the review of all expense transactions and lines.
  • Manages month-end and year-end financial close processes ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepares foundation financial statements and budget variance reports for presentation at board meetings. Serves as liaison to UNT System and UNT Health budget and finance offices and the UNT Health Foundation board of directors.
  • In coordination with leadership, develops the annual operating budget for Institutional Advancement and UNT Health Foundation.
  • Completes all preparation and works directly with external auditors on the foundation’s annual financial audit.
  • Provides technical assistance in clarifying such operating matters as allocation of income or expense, cost accounting procedures, closing, correcting, or adjusting journal entries, preparation of exhibits and schedules.
  • Ensures accuracy and integrity for all data inputs for financial databases. Evaluates policies, procedures and internal controls for compliance and accounting best practices and develops and implements necessary changes in consultation with leadership.
