Department Summary

Advising Services at the University of North Texas provides proactive, holistic academic advising and student success support for exploratory, transitioning, and prospective students. The department advances student achievement through innovative initiatives in proactive advising and data-informed practices, while fostering advisor excellence through professional development and advisor training.

Position Overview

This position supports student success through proactive, student-centered advising strategies. The role is responsible for counseling students by assessing their interests, aptitudes, and academic progress to guide major selection, degree planning, and career alignment. It also connects students with campus resources to support academic persistence, personal development, and timely graduation.

In addition to direct student advising, the position may serve as a subject matter expert or escalation point for complex cases. This position also assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of innovative advising initiatives and student success programs that align with institutional goals and address evolving student needs. This includes creating and delivering presentations, coordinating retention-focused initiatives, and equipping staff with tools and training that support student achievement and career readiness.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree and four years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.

* Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
* Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or related field.

Experience in an advising office counseling students who present with uncertainty of major, advising transfer students, and/or working with at-risk populations.
Demonstrate strong organizational skills, proven self-direction, and attention to detail. Demonstrate strong communication skills, verbal and written Experience working with multiple departments, cross-campus collaboration, and/or committee work. Commitment to student success, with a passion for inquiry, creative problem solving, and innovating.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

 

Job Duties 

  • Counsel exploring majors students on their interests, aptitudes, and abilities to support academic planning and informed major choice.
  • Advise prospective students on university and program-specific requirements, including transfer credit applicability, in a timely and professional manner.
  • Consult on complex student issues or exceptions, providing specialized support as needed. 
  • Develop and implement programs focused on major exploration, student success, and retention & completion. 
  • Use predictive analytics to identify at-risk students and implement timely interventions; track and report outcomes to inform future planning. 
  • Collaborate with faculty and campus partners to address barriers to persistence and support individual student cases. 
  • Coordinate OAS participation at events, special programs, and communication campaigns. 
  • Coordinate EAB Navigate outreach and communication campaigns targeting specific student populations. 
  • Provide leadership support in the Director’s absence to ensure continuity of operations. 
  • Represent the advising unit on cross-campus committees and workgroups to support collaborative initiatives. 
  • Support Work Integrated Learning initiatives, which may include serving as Instructor of Record for the Braven course, ensuring compliance, submitting grades, and collaborating with UNT and Braven leadership.
