Department Summary

The University of North Texas (UNT) College of Music is the largest public-university music program in the United States, and one of its most respected colleges of music. UNT offers fully accredited degrees from the bachelor to doctoral levels and is home to the world’s first jazz-studies degree program. Faculty include internationally acclaimed artists and scholars in commercial music, composition, conducting, ethnomusicology, music education, music entrepreneurship, music history, music theory, and performance. UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. Position Overview

Teaching:
Recruit, retain, and teach an outstanding enrollment of undergraduate and graduate jazz students. Supervise graduate-degree requirements, including graduate committees and doctoral projects/documents. The primary instructional foci of this position will include music business, jazz improvisation, and jazz musicianship. Applied instruction and other teaching assignments will align with the successful candidate’s qualifications and expertise. Other duties as assigned including, but not limited to coaching jazz, combo coaching, jazz pedagogy, literature, etc.

Service:
Participate fully in academic and professional activities, including service assignments, across the campus and the profession.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in music; artist-level qualifications in saxophone, trombone, or trumpet; successful teaching experience in music business, jazz improvisation, and jazz musicianship; success in, and enthusiasm for, recruiting/retaining a robust cohort of undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate is professional, collegial, and respectful in their interactions with all colleagues and students. A terminal degree in the assigned discipline or related field is required for teaching graduate level courses. Additional consideration may be given for equivalent applied experience in accordance with faculty credentialing guidelines. Meets the criteria outlined in UNT Policy 06.005.

Preferred Qualifications

Earned doctorate in music. The position is open to instrumentalists, with preference for saxophone, trombone, or trumpet. However, candidates on other instruments will be considered. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise and employ innovative approaches to teaching music business, jazz improvisation, and jazz theory/aural skills at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as excellence in applied instruction. The successful candidate is encouraged to remain professionally active as a jazz performer and educator.

The College of Music supports a growing degree program and a minor in Commercial Music (tracks include General, Music Business, Music for Media, and Production). Stylistic fluency across a broad range of jazz traditions, contemporary practices, and commercial styles, along with a history of engaging students with diverse musical interests, is highly preferred and encouraged.
