Department Summary

The Department of Mechanical Engineering prepares students for a career in the ever-growing fields of construction engineering, energy, and engineering management. Undergraduates who choose to pursue a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering will combine fundamentals of mechanical engineering with broad specialization on subjects related to construction, energy, and engineering management. For graduate students, our programs will offer opportunities to learn fundamental and applied knowledge compatible with all areas of mechanical, construction, and energy engineering.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for the daily management of the Engineering Manufacturing Facility (EMF) DP F160. The EMF provides the capacity to complete engineering projects that require various capabilities including machining (milling, turning, drilling); shearing/forming; welding; surface grinding/polishing; injection molding; heat treating; metallography; hardness/tensile testing; additive manufacturing; and thermal testing among others. Duties will be varied and complex. Assignments are broad in nature and will require advanced creativity technical ability.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in related field and five years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Employees in this job may be responsible for conducting research on, working on, or having the ability to access critical organizational infrastructure and they must be able to maintain the security and integrity of the infrastructure related to this role.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Extensive knowledge of equipment and instrumentation appropriate to the nature of the lab and/or the discipline and of supplies including operation, setup, storage, and maintenance. Experience in supervision and budget management/oversight. Working knowledge of instructional applications and techniques related to the laboratory and/or the discipline. Physical abilities and skills to readily assemble and operate equipment and instrumentation. Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions applicable to the lab, particularly in the sciences or engineering or art. Ability to make effective presentations of experiments or software, and provide instruction in laboratory techniques, use of equipment, use of software, procedures, and safety rules. Experience in planning and coordinating large projects, renovations, equipment upgrades. Written communication skills relevant to plans, instructions, manuals, protocols, procedures

Job Duties

  • Assisting students and other technical personnel in the planning and design of research projects. 
  • Management of complex instructional and research activities for the EMF requiring highly specialized technical skills and the ability to integrate and analyze practical information to meet each demand. 
  • Assisting in the planning and design of instructional activities serving multiple departments of the College of Engineering. 
  • Developing and managing plans for the design, expansion, improvement or enhancement of facilities, equipment, software procedures and instructional methods, installing and calibrating instrumentation and equipment for Instructional Labs. 
  • Overseeing the training, safety protocols, and security of general access and usage of the EMF. 
  • Working with College and University personnel to manage purchasing maintenance of supplies equipment. 
  • Serving as a resource for in the resolution of complex problems involving the EMF. 
  • Maintaining the highest standards of excellence for the EMF by following all departmental and university policies and procedures.

  • Lifting and moving objects up to 100 pounds or more.
  • Operating machinery and/or power tools.
  • Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
