The University of North Texas at Dallas invites applications for the position of TRIO Upward Bound Instructor for subjects: ENGLISH, SCIENCE, MATH, TECHNOLOGY and FOREIGN LANGUAGE.

Position Overview

To serve as Instructor for the Upward Bound Program during the Summer Institute. Instructors will design and deliver innovative lessons to support students from 9th – 12th grade in their academic and/or elective subjects for added learning and preparation for High School and Collegiate Studies. Instructional design and delivery is expected to be Differentiated, Innovative, Hands-On, Creative and/ or Utilize Various Technology Platforms use are encouraged.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess the following required qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher with concentration in the field of learning development and/or in the assigned teaching field.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective rapport with students and faculty.
  • Sensitive to students’ abilities and needs.
  • Be able to provide hands-on activities and research opportunities/ideas.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to utilize effective pedagogy in the classroom.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Ability to instruct and communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
  • Familiarity with syllabus design, learning outcomes, and academic standards in education.
  • Proficiency with learning management systems virtual teaching platforms (e.g., Zoom, Teams), and digital tools used in education.
  • Ability to establish, enforce and maintain a behavior management plan.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience working with or teaching high school students.
  • Knowledge of effective classroom management and instructional techniques.

Job Duties

  • The 6-week position includes training and 6 weeks of 24 hr. supervision of up to 60 high school youth in a residential setting within an academic and recreational pre-college program. - (Essential)
  • % - Actively work with staff in implementation, supervision, and support of youth in all phases of programming activities. - (Essential)
  • Assist Instructors in daytime classes. - (Essential)
  • Tutor and supervise 10-12 students during tutoring/class sessions. Student mentoring. - (Essential)
  • Plan/supervise recreational activities and field trips. Supervise and maintain order among youth at all times. - (Essential)
  • Attend all staff meetings and maintain records. - (Essential)
  • Develop and implement programming for youth as a workshop coordinator/leader. Provide a pleasant, comfortable atmosphere conducive to maximum student growth. Interpret and enforce compliance of rules and regulations of students as per TRIO and Institutional policies. - (Essential)
  • Assure that dormitory discipline and related matters are handled in a fair and consistent manner. Assist students from Sunday evening until Friday afternoon during the residential program. - (Essential)
  • Prepare and lead enrichment activities as assigned. Keep and prepare reports and records as assigned by the Upward Bound Manager. Verify with staff members in regard to students’ paperwork before calling parents/guardians, administering medication, allowing visitors, and taking photos of students. Alert all staff members of any/all emergencies and/or urgent matters. - (Essential)
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Lifting and moving objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting or standing.
  • Repetitive motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
