Department Summary

The University of North Texas (UNT) Student Health and Wellness Center is a full-service medical center offering all UNT students general wellness and specialty medical care. We are staffed with licensed physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, certified lab technologists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, licensed nurses, and medical assistants.

Position Overview

The Health Educator is responsible for collaborating with the Health Promotion Team to evaluate student health education needs and implement evidence-based health promotion programs and services for the University of North Texas. The Health Educator plans and executes outreach activities and events, provides health education, evaluates program effectiveness, and collaborates with key stakeholders on- and off-campus to develop a comprehensive approach to health promotion.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in public health, community health, health promotion, health education, or related field and 3 years of professional related experience or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Effective written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
* Proficiency in a variety of computer software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, Canva).
* Strong track record of working collaboratively within a team.
* Capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously while prioritizing tasks and managing time efficiently.
* Familiarity with application of ACHA Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education (SPHPHE) and other relevant campus resources.
* Knowledge of health promotion strategies within the context of higher education.
* Experience applying health promotion, behavior change, and population-based theories and models.
* Experience creating and using a variety of effective educational methods, including written materials, presentations, workshops, trainings, individual behavior change sessions, and small group facilitation.
* Ability to design and implement evidence-informed health promotion programs based on literature review and needs assessments, resulting in measurable improvements in student health, well-being, and academic success.
* Supervisory skills to effectively lead student employees and interns.

Preferred Qualifications

-Bachelor’s degree in public health, community health, health promotion, health education, or a related field, and three years of related professional experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

-Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES) or Certified in Public Health (CPH) certification preferred; CHES/MCHES/CPH eligibility also accepted.

Job Duties

  • Conducts effective individual health consultations to connect students to appropriate health education and resources.
  • Actively seeks on-campus and off-campus partners for health education resources. Seeks out funding opportunities from external sources. 
  • Presents a professional demeanor when interacting with internal and external customers. Follows appropriate chain of command.
  • Participates in all mandatory SHWC trainings and meetings, including committees, as assigned. Practices and follows proper privacy and security regulations. 
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Participates/volunteers with SHWC events, including internal events, orientations, etc.
  • Assesses the health education needs of students. Develops and implements appropriate health education programs and campuswide initiatives to change health related behaviors on campus.
