Department Summary

The University of North Texas (UNT) Jazz Studies Program, established in 1947, is a world-renowned leader in jazz education. Offering comprehensive undergraduate and graduate degrees, the program trains students in performance, composition, arranging, and pedagogy. Our acclaimed faculty, distinguished performers, and educators mentor students in a dynamic environment. Students perform in various ensembles, including the Grammy-nominated One O’Clock Lab Band. Position Overview

The Faculty for the UNT Vocal Jazz Workshop serve as key educators and mentors, delivering dynamic and practical instruction in a week-long immersive jazz experience. Designed for high school and collegiate vocalists, as well as educators seeking to deepen their understanding of vocal jazz, the workshop emphasizes ensemble singing, solo performance, improvisation, and vocal technique within a supportive and collaborative setting.

Faculty members bring expertise, creativity, and a passion for jazz education, helping participants build foundational and advanced skills in a range of stylistic and technical areas. Through rehearsals, coaching sessions, masterclasses, and performances, workshop faculty play a central role in cultivating both the musical growth and confidence of each participant.

Minimum Qualifications

Demonstrated excellence in vocal jazz performance and pedagogy
Teaching experience with high school, collegiate, or adult learners in a workshop or academic setting
Degree in music or extensive professional experience in jazz performance/education preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Proficiency in jazz theory, improvisation, and ensemble direction.
Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Required License/Registration/Certifications

Communicating with others to exchange information. Lifting and moving objects up to 20 pounds. Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting or standing. No adverse environmental conditions expected.

Job Duties

• Lead daily instruction in areas such as vocal technique, ensemble singing, jazz improvisation, and repertoire. 
• Coach small groups and soloists, providing individualized feedback and guidance. 
• Conduct masterclasses, demonstrations, or clinics in areas of expertise. 
• Assist in preparing students for culminating performances or showcases. 
• Collaborate with fellow faculty to ensure a cohesive and engaging educational experience. 
• Foster a professional, and artistically inspiring learning environment. 

Physical Requirements

Communicating with others to exchange information.
Lifting and Moving objects up to 20 pounds.
Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
