The Opportunity

Join us at the University of the Sunshine Coast, where innovation meets impact. As a Data Management Specialist, you will lead the design, development, and implementation of data management initiatives crucial for the responsible and effective use of our data and information assets. Your role is pivotal in enabling the university to understand its data landscape, from storage and accessibility to utilisation in achieving strategic and operational goals. Key responsibilities include advancing data governance, ensuring data quality, promoting interoperability, developing architectural models, and overseeing the ethical use of data. Working collaboratively with peers and subject matter experts, you will elevate and fortify foundational digital and data management capabilities across the university, driving excellence and innovation in every endeavour.

You will

  • lead strategic projects that strengthen how we manage, understand and use data through training, awareness and capability building;
  • deliver initiatives that recognise data as a vital asset to unlock insights, manage risk and support everyday decision-making; and
  • shape and implement practical data strategies and practices that align with global standards and support the university’s future direction

About you

Our ideal candidate is someone who’s curious, collaborative and genuinely excited about the role data plays in shaping smart decisions and better outcomes. You’re someone who gets a kick out of making complex things clear and practical, and you're always on the lookout for ways to improve how data is managed, shared and understood. Whether you're building strategies, supporting big-picture projects or helping others boost their data confidence, you bring fresh thinking, a solid grasp of global standards, and a drive to make data work better for everyone.

You will possess:

  • Practical experience applying data management principles in a large or complex environment, with the know-how to design strategies, frameworks and processes that make a real impact
  • A good understanding of compliance in a university or similar setting, with experience navigating areas like information management, public records, copyright, privacy and foreign interference
  • Clear and confident communication skills, with the ability to translate complex ideas for different audiences and build strong relationships across the board
  • A track record of delivering projects across multiple teams or functions, using your planning, consulting and influencing skills to bring people together and get things done
