Join Our Team: Protect, Serve, and Make a Difference!

We are the Rural Fire Service (RFS), a dedicated community of volunteers providing fire and emergency services to approximately 95% of NSW. When you work with the RFS, you join a passionate team committed to protecting our neighbours, the wider community, and the environment from the threat of bushfires and other emergencies. With over 70,000 volunteer members and staff, we embody the spirit of mutual respect, support, friendship, and camaraderie. We are one team with many players, united by a single purpose. If you share our passion for community service and environmental protection, we want to hear from you! Become a part of our mission to safeguard lives and our cherished NSW landscapes.

What you’ll be doing:

Join the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) — one of the world’s largest volunteer-based emergency services and play a critical role in protecting communities and the environment. We’re seeking a Supervisor, Fleet Design to lead the design and development of specialised firefighting vehicles and equipment, ensuring our frontline teams are equipped with innovative, fit-for-purpose solutions. You'll be leading engineering design projects for firefighting appliances, while managing end-to-end project delivery, including planning, risk, costing, and compliance. You'll collaborate with internal stakeholders, government agencies, and suppliers to drive innovation and continuous improvement in fleet design.

To thrive in this role, you will:

  • Have proven experience in engineering design and project delivery within complex or regulated environments, ideally involving vehicles, equipment or specialised assets.
  • Be a vehicle design specialist, with hands-on experience in vehicle engineering, modification and integration — including fitting components such as cranes or specialised equipment onto trucks, with a strong understanding of homologation, certification and compliance requirements.
  • Have the ability to plan, coordinate and deliver end-to-end projects, managing timelines, budgets, risks and compliance requirements.
  • Be people-focused, a confident leader who can supervise, mentor and develop a small team while fostering a positive and high-performing culture.
  • Be analytical and solutions-oriented, with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications and standards to deliver practical outcomes.
  • Be stakeholder-savvy and experienced in building collaborative relationships across internal teams, government agencies, suppliers and contractors to achieve shared outcomes.
  • Have an appreciation for working within a volunteer-based organisation and motivated by contributing to community safety and emergency response.
