Duties & Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Senior Vice Provost (SVP), the Vice Provost (VP) for Faculty Affairs provides support for the entire faculty lifecycle. The VP works with the SVP to ensure the integrity of the promotion and tenure (P&T) process, the development, interpretation and implementation of faculty policies, the resolution of complex personnel issues, and implementation of initiatives and priorities. As a key partner to the SVP, the VP works with Deans, Associate Deans, and Department Chairs to ensure that faculty affairs practices across all schools and colleges are equitable, transparent, and aligned with the university’s R1 research mission. The VP works with the Assistant Vice Provosts in faculty affairs to provide high quality service to the university.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Promotion, Tenure, and Academic Personnel (50%)

  • Process Oversight: Support the SVP in directing the university-wide P&T cycle, ensuring that all dossiers meet the rigorous standards of an R1 institution.
  • Standards Alignment: Work with individual schools/departments to review and approve unit-level P&T criteria, ensuring they align with the University Faculty Handbook.
  • Special Appointments: Manage the administrative review for emeritus status, endowed professorships, and "stop-the-clock" tenure extensions.
  • Digital Integration: Oversee the Faculty Activity Reporting (FAR) and digital dossier systems to ensure data integrity and ease of use for faculty.

2. Policy and Process Implementation (25%)

  • Policy stewardship: Lead the periodic review and revision of faculty policies Handbook.
  • Contract Management: Advise on the structuring of faculty contracts, including non-tenure track (NTT), research-only, and clinical faculty roles.
  • Workload Policy: Assist Deans in developing equitable faculty workload models that balance high-level research expectations with teaching and service.
  • Faculty Activity Reporting: Assist in the development and implementation of faculty annual evaluation updates.

3. Faculty Relations and Conflict Resolution (10%)

  • Faculty concerns: Serve as a point of contact for Deans and Chairs regarding faculty grievances, and performance management when the SVP is not available, and partnering closely with the Executive Director for Faculty HR on any conduct concerns or disciplinary actions.
  • Shared Governance: Act as one of the Provost’s liaisons to the Faculty Senate’s Faculty Affairs Committee.
  • Crisis Management: Provide guidance on sensitive issues involving academic freedom, research misconduct, or professional ethics.

4. Leadership and Professional Development (15%)

  • Leadership Pipeline: Identify and mentor high-potential faculty for administrative leadership roles (Assistant Deans, Directors, etc.).
  • Continuing professional development: Work with faculty affairs team to deliver high quality workshops and support services.

5. Additional Responsibilities (As Assigned)

  • Special Projects: Lead or support high‑priority initiatives delegated by the SVP
  • Institutional Representation: Serve on university committees, task forces, or working groups as needed to advance institutional goals related to faculty affairs
  • Other Duties as Assigned: Perform additional responsibilities as requested by the SVP or Provost to support the effective functioning of the Office of Faculty Affairs and the broader academic mission.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Terminal Degree: Ph.D., Ed.D., or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Academic Rank: Must hold a tenured faculty appointment at the rank of Professor.
  • Experience: Minimum of five years of administrative experience (e.g., Program Chair, Department Chair, Associate Dean, or Center Director) in an R1 university setting.
  • Conflict Resolution: Demonstrated ability to manage sensitive personnel issues with diplomacy, confidentiality, and fairness.
  • Communication: History of timely, thoughtful, and accurate communication with colleagues, faculty, staff, students, and supervisors.
  • Commitment to VCU Culture: Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Health Sciences Familiarity: Experience navigating the unique promotion tracks of a medical or health sciences campus (crucial for a VCU-style environment).
  • System Knowledge: Proficiency with faculty management software (e.g., Interfolio, Watermark, or Workday).
  • Analytical Mindset: Ability to use data to identify trends in faculty retention, salary equity, and productivity.

Salary Range: Commensurate with experience
