The VCU Department of Psychiatry is recruiting for a Clinical Research Coordinator position. This position is within the Virginia Institute for Psychiatric and Behavioral Genetics (VIPBG), directed by Dr. Kenneth Kendler. VIPBG is a multi-disciplinary research institute devoted to understanding the etiology of psychiatric and substance abuse disorders using a range of genetically informed methods. This position will support the Asian Bipolar Genetic Network (A-BIG-NET), a large-scale genetic study of Bipolar Disorder I in East and South Asia. A-BIG-NET is an international collaboration with leading investigators from the United States, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, India, and Pakistan.
Position Responsibilities:
The Clinical Research Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating and providing scientific support for the phenotyping (clinical assessment) portion of the study, ensuring that participant interviews are conducted consistently across sites, that interviewers are well-trained, and that data collected are high quality. The incumbent will work closely with international collaborators to support standardized procedures and effective communication across study sites.
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Coordinate clinical interview and assessment activities across multiple international research sites.
- Help maintain and update the structured interview instrument used to assess study participants.
- Assist with training research staff at participating sites on interview procedures and study protocols.
- Evaluate interviewer performance and provide feedback to ensure consistency and adherence to study guidelines.
- Serve as a main point of contact for questions related to clinical assessments and study procedures.
- Collaborate with other research teams to support integration of clinical, genetic, and environmental data.
- Support data quality checks and organization of clinical data.
- Contribute to research activities such as data management, analyses, reports, and manuscripts.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience working with clinical populations or training/education in clinical assessment and interviewing.
- Strong organizational, communication, and time management skills, with careful attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented research environment.
- Ability to coordinate across multiple priorities and communicate effectively.
- Willingness to travel to study sites and meeting locations, as applicable.
- Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral degree in Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
- Experience in clinical research, particularly involving structured interviews or behavioral/mental health assessments.
- Experience training or supervising research staff or students.
- Familiarity with data management and quality control practices in research settings.
- Experience working on multi-site or collaborative research projects.
- Basic experience with data analysis or statistical software (e.g., R, SPSS) is a plus.
Salary Range: $55,000-70,000
