Duties & Responsibilities:

The Office of the Provost seeks a program coordinator for the newly-established Office of Prior Learning. This role is central to VCU’s mission to attract and support adult and returning learners, empowering them to turn their lived and professional experiences into college credit. The program coordinator will serve as the Office’s primary point of contact for students, assisting students understand opportunities and pathways to Credit for Prior Learning (CPL). This position requires a combination of student advising and enrollment coordination. You will be the bridge between a student’s career history and their future VCU degree. This position will report to the Associate Director of the Office of Prior Learning.

Specialized CPL Advising:

  • Conduct initial screenings to determine a student's eligibility for various CPL modes.
  • Advise students on how to maximize the university’s 30-credit CPL limit to accelerate their degree completion.
  • Guide students through degree pathways that meet their unique needs.
  • Document advising interactions in the university’s advising management software

Portfolio Support & Instruction:

  • Assist in running the portfolio development course where students build the evidence required to earn credit.

Office Administration & Coordination:

  • Facilitate the "hand-off" of students to other colleges and programs once CPL credits have been assessed and applied.
  • Collaborate with the Transfer Center and the Registrar to ensure CPL credits are accurately recorded on student transcripts.
  • Coordinate with participating departments to schedule and administer departmental challenge exams.
  • Provide support in developing and administering prior learning assessment opportunities.
  • Provide support to the Program Director in the administrative tasks of the office, including scheduling and ordering.
  • Collaborate with the Transfer Center and other university offices to provide programming that supports nontraditional and adult learners.

Pre-Enrollment Outreach & Support:

  • Work with the Associate Director and other campus stakeholders to market CPL opportunities to prospective "some college, no degree" students.
  • Manage recruitment pipelines as well as prospective student inquiries.

Success Tracking:

  • Monitor the academic progress of students using CPL to assess Office’s success.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Participate on relevant strategic University committees, task forces, and ad hoc work groups.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Detail oriented with the ability to prioritize responsibilities and stay organized during peak workflow times.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively as well as autonomously with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU

Preferred Hiring Standards:

  • A minimum of two years of experience working in higher education. 
  • Experience with transfer students, adult learners, and/or prior learning assessment.
  • Deep understanding of various CPL modes, including ACE/military credits, CLEP, portfolio assessment, and challenge exams.
  • Understanding of departmental, college, and university policies and procedures, as well as programs of study at VCU. 
  • Ability to market the value of CPL to nontraditional learners and to the University community.
  • Enrollment, recruiting, and/or advising experience in higher education.
  • Experience with one-on-one coaching.
  • Experience facilitating group workshops and/or information sessions 
  • Familiarity with VCU systems such as Banner, Navigate, etc.

Salary Range: $38,900 - $58,500
