Position Summary:

The Minority AIDS Initiative (MAI) Health Educator markets, coordinates, plans and implements HIV Education and Prevention training programs to and for health care providers at all levels, state employees and members of community-based AIDS Service Organizations throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. They also focus on building partnership and providing educational opportunities to Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) including Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Federally Qualified Health Centers and other minority-led or serving providers. They work collaboratively with and serving as a liaison between health care educators and clinicians at the Infectious Disease Clinic of the Virginia Commonwealth University Health Center, the Virginia Department of Health, the VCU HIV/AIDS Center, the Virginia HIV/AIDS Resource and Consultation Center (VHARCC), and the Mid-Atlantic AIDS Education and Training Center (MAAETC) to accomplish these goals.

Restricted Position:  This grant-funded position is currently funded through June 30th, 2027.  Ongoing employment is contingent upon continued funding, need, and performance with the possibility of future full-time employment if funding continues.

Position Duties and Responsibilities:

  • HIV/AIDS Education Training & Technical Assistance (80%): 
    • Instructional responsibility to include content review and delivery, to moderate and facilitate programs.
    • Participate in public education activities related to HIV prevention, testing/counseling, and other related areas of HIV care.
    • Provide technical assistance to agencies, including governmental, MSIs, HBCUs and community-based organizations.
  • Outreach, Partnership building, and coordination (20%):
    • Outreach to MSIs, HBCUs, and minority-led or serving organizations to assess training needs and coordinate programming.
    • Under guidance of program director, coordinate with subject matter experts to build curriculum.
  • Information Management (5%):
    • Assist in program registration, information dissemination, post-program evaluation using qualitative and quantitative methods. 

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of HIV prevention and treatment in Virginia, including rapid HIV/HCV testing and Ryan White Programs.
  • Understanding of MSIs, HBCUs, and experiences of minority communities.
  • Understanding of adult learning principles
  • Ability to communicate effective in public speaking
  • Occasional (3-4 times per year) overnight, in-state travel required

Required Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in rapid HIV/HCV Testing or Ryan White Case Management Programs
  • Demonstrated experiences working in or with HBCUs, MSIs, or other minority-led/serving programs.
  • Experience in training, teaching, coaching, or HIV Peer Review
  • Master’s degree in Nursing, Social Work, Public Health, Health Education or similar field and 2 years of professional experience in direct HIV practice. OR Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Social Work, Public Health, Health Education or similar field and 4 years of professional experience in direct HIV practice. OR High School Diploma or equivalent and 8 years of professional experience in direct HIV practice. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience teaching Rapid HIV/HCV Testing.
  • Previous experience teaching Ryan White Case Management Programs.
  • Previous experience with HIV/HCV program delivery in HBCUs, MSIs, or other minority-led/serving programs.

Salary Range: $57,000-$62,000
