Duties & Responsibilities:
VCU’s Facilities Management Department is seeking to hire a Plumber for Facilities Operations.
The Plumber is responsible for all reactive and preventative maintenance throughout the Residential Life and Housing facilities. In addition, this position would be designated and essential for emergencies, including inclement weather.
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Utilize knowledge of the plumbing trade to perform preventive maintenance, repair and installation of building infrastructure ensuring efficient operation of Residential Life and Housing facilities
- Provide exemplary customer service to all faculty, staff and students supporting the University’s mission of teaching, high-impact research and creative expression
- Identify and document system deficiencies using diagnostic tools and advise management of tasks requiring priority attention
- Provide quality workmanship and service to maximize system availability and minimize unscheduled downtime
Reactive/Service Work
- Independently respond to service requests requiring diagnosis and repair of various building infrastructure, supply and waste systems, plumbing fixtures, including sinks, water closets, showers/tubs, drinking fountains, pumps, and other plumbing/mechanical systems utilizing specialized knowledge of plumbing theory and practice
- Independently respond to service requests requiring diagnosis and repair of appliances, carpentry, electrical, and mechanical systems
Preventive Maintenance
- Independently perform and complete regularly scheduled preventive maintenance to various building infrastructure, such as pumps, plumbing fixates, roof drains and other plumbing related components
Customer Service/Teamwork
- Works in a collaborative and collegial manner throughout the department, division, and University

Communication and Monitoring Work of Others
- Advise supervision and or management by recommending equipment maintenance tasks and identifying equipment needing priority attention
- Communicate orally and in writing regarding work schedules, system problems, estimated completion times and effects of system problems on occupant safety and comfort
- Work with lesser skilled team members in the various techniques of the trades to increase their skill level and ability to work independently
- Use trade knowledge to monitor work of contractors to assure compliance with specifications, codes and drawings
Designated/Other Duties as Assigned
- Other duties as assigned
- Work/on-call during inclement weather and emergencies
- Assume on-call responsibility on a rotating basis
- Substitutes for the Superintendent, including time card approval and work site management
Computer Skills/AiM
- Utilize computer skills to access email and research parts/information as required
- Demonstrate working knowledge of AiM and AiM GO ensuring prompt completion of work requests and time card entry following all established work flow processes, including notes logs for all work requests over 30 days
Organize Mechanical Areas
- Clean and organize materials in the Shop and mechanical areas
- Participates in periodic cleaning of shop
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- State of Virginia Journeyman Plumbing and Backflow Prevention Device License required or the ability to obtain within the first year of employment
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in commercial/institutional plumbing and mechanical maintenance
- Ability to diagnose, repair, service and install a wide variety of plumbing and mechanical systems
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing to supervision, other employees and customers
- Knowledge of appropriate building codes
- Ability to read/interpret drawings, plans, specifications and scopes
- Ability to use a wide variety of hand tools and power equipment
- High School diploma or GED required
- Valid Virginia Driver’s License required
- Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Salary Range: $65,000 - $69,000 ($31.25/hr - $33.17/hr) + up to $2,500 Sign-on Bonus
