VCUarts Qatar is seeking an adjunct instructor for the Fall 2026 semester within the Art Foundation program to teach the following course:
Course: ARTF 131 – Drawing Studio
Semester course; 6 studio hours. 3 credits. Enrollment is restricted to first-year fine arts and design majors in the School of the Arts.
This studio-based course explores the historical principles of drawing and their relevance in contemporary practice. It introduces students to core concepts such as line, perspective, gesture, figure drawing, space, atmosphere, and erasure through immersive studio work. Emphasis is placed on developing observation, interpretation, and visual expression through repeated physical engagement with drawing.
Position Responsibilities:
The adjunct instructor will be expected to:
- Complete all required university training (e.g., FERPA) before the first class session
- Provide students with a course syllabus during the first class session that outlines course objectives, structure, requirements, grading criteria, and relevant policies provided by the Director
- Enforce department and university policies in a constructive and professional manner
- Prepare thoroughly for each class to ensure effective use of studio time in support of course learning objectives
- Coordinate with other faculty members teaching ARTF 131 to ensure alignment with shared departmental learning outcomes and course structure
- Hold weekly office hours at a rate of one hour per class taught (two office hours per week for this position) and maintain availability to students via university email
- Assess all assignments and provide timely, constructive feedback
- Submit midterm and final grades according to the schedule and method provided by the university registrar
- Attend all departmental meetings
Required Qualifications:
- A graduate degree (MFA or equivalent) in a discipline relevant to drawing and studio art
- Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills
- Enthusiasm for teaching in a multicultural environment
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
- Eligibility to work in Qatar or meet specific immigration/employment requirements under Qatari law.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior teaching experience, particularly in studio-based courses
- Strong oral communication and presentation skills
- Experience teaching in Qatar, the Arab Gulf region, or the Middle East
