Military-Affiliated Student Support is part of the Student Support team in Campus Life within the Division of Student Affairs at Oklahoma State University. Supporting military-affiliated students—whether they are veterans, active-duty service members, reservists, guardsmen, dependents, or families—requires a thoughtful, inclusive, and well-resourced approach to transition successfully into the higher education setting. The Coordinator will develop and implement transition programs for military-affiliated students, focusing on their successful acclimation to university life and retention. Responsibilities include creating learning outcomes, organizing workshops, and collaborating with campus partners to provide holistic support. The Coordinator is responsible for the operations and student experience offered in the Military-Affiliated Student Support Office.  The role also involves recruiting, developing, and supervising student employees. In addition to transition programming, the coordinator will develop and implement a strategic plan for retaining and supporting students with a military affiliation prior to and post-transition to the university. The coordinator is part of a team supporting students with various backgrounds and life experiences.   

Responsibilities:

Support and Advancement of Military-Affiliated students – 50% 

  1. Directly advise, counsel, and direct veteran and military-affiliated students to resources both on and off campus to aid these students in their educational pursuits. 

  1. Strengthen relationships and actively engage the veteran and military-affiliated student population on campus. 

  1. Develop, coordinate, and assess programs for military-affiliated students as well as celebration of veterans in coordination with other offices on campus (i.e., Veterans Appreciation and Awareness Week, Veterans Day, Women’s Veteran Symposium, Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day, 9/11, etc.). 

  1. Develop and implement an intentional transition program focused on the transition of military-affiliated students to the higher education setting. To include but not limited to an orientation, VA benefits, academic expectations, campus resources, mental health, career services, etc.  

  1. Track student engagement, program participation, and learning outcomes across all military-affiliated programming through the use of data, dashboards, and assessment tools. Execute interventions to support unengaged students. 

  1. Develop advertising, communication plan, and annual calendar for events and activities.  

  1. Update and maintain information for applicable web pages, newsletters, and/or social media in coordination with the communication and marketing team.  

  1. Perform outreach activities and events to promote awareness of services provided (i.e. tabling, orientation, Cowboy Welcome events, etc.).  

  1. Support and advise (if requested by the students) the student organization(s) for military-affiliated students [Military Affiliated Association (2025)]. 

  1. Coordinate the selection of veteran and military-affiliated scholarship recipients. 

  1. Provide frequent education and awareness to the campus community on the military-affiliated student experience along with resources and services. 

  1. Serve on the Veteran Faculty and Staff Association Board. 

  1. Participate in marketing Campus Life services and resources through various means, including browse tables at orientation and enrollment as well as admission recruitment events.   

 

Operation of Military-Affiliated Student Support Center – 25% 

  1. Oversee the operations of the Military-Affiliated Student Support Center.  

  1. Assist in reviewing and developing policies, procedures, and training to support successful operations within Military-Affiliated Student Support Center.   

  1. Recruit, select, train, supervise, and evaluate VA Work Study Students, advising them in maintaining Center operations. 

  1. Establish a student development and career readiness centered approach for student employees to be implemented through training, workshops, assessments, and individual follow-up. 

  1. Develop and maintain relationships with off-campus organizations, offices, and state and federal agencies to support the academic success of military-affiliated students at OSU. 

  1. Collaborate with Veteran Benefits office to support student needs.  

  1. Participate in local, state, and/or national organizations to build institutional networks, knowledge, and innovations surrounding student and/or stakeholder needs.  

 

Individual Student Support– 15%  

  1. Provide direct student success assistance through one-on-one conversations and utilizing cross-campus partnerships. Meet individually with students identified as needing additional support.  

  1. Address other student support needs as they are identified and collaborate with the Student Support team on escalated student matters. Submit Care Reports as needed for students of concern. 

  1. Provide a timely response and follow-up for identified students of concern from the Case Management Team. 

  1. Identify, update, and maintain military-affiliated student information for tracking and reporting to internal and external partners. 

  1. Support the advising process by monitoring academic alert systems and providing context on military-affiliated student concerns to academic advisors. 

  1. Consult with academic advisors, residential life, admissions, tutors, success coaches, student accessibility, and other campus partners. 

 

General Administration – 10% 

  1. Collect data and conduct assessments to contribute to an annual report. Prepare program reports, as needed, for departmental and/or key stakeholders.  

  1. Collaborate with OSU Foundation to articulate funding needs, build veteran-centered proposals, and report impact of scholarship and program funds. Compile information as needed for the OSU Foundation and donors.   

  1. Complete surveys as requested on OSU military-affiliated students (i.e. Military Times). 

  1. Engage in regular assessment to identify program achievements and areas for development. Synthesize program data, assessment, and research to set future goals that assist in meeting objectives. 

  1. Keep up to date on any federal regulations, case law, and best practices impacting this position.  

  1. Submit timely requests for purchases, maintain financial records, and uphold responsible fiscal and procurement practices.  

  1. Establish and maintain appropriate boundaries and relationships with students, graduate students, and staff.   

  1. Meet with your supervisor and keep them informed of your responsibilities and progress regularly.     

 

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field. Post-secondary education may substitute for years of experience. (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)

  • Two years of related work experience.

  • Experience working directly with military-affiliated students as a military-affiliated individual, including working with or in the armed forces or a family member. 

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.

  • Knowledgeable about and/or skills in college student development and educational best practices and principles. 

  • High degree of personal/professional integrity, respect for privacy and confidentiality, and a demonstrated sense of ethics.  

  • Ability to work independently, multi-task, and coordinate numerous detailed tasks as well as proven success with working on a team. 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.    

  • Proven ability to work with populations of different backgrounds and life experiences.  

  • Demonstrated asset-based thinking skills when working with others. 

  • Demonstrated ability to re-frame complex situations to put forward plans of action with deliverables. 

  • The proven ability to collaborate successfully with multiple departments. 

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in a related field such as education, higher education, psychology, human development, counseling, leadership, social work 
  • Two or more years of full-time, consistent professional experience in student affairs, student development, or work supporting students in a higher education setting. 
  • Prior experience with data analysis and utilizing data for outcome-based decision-making for programming and initiatives. 

  • Prior experience in curriculum and/or programmatic development in an educational setting. 

  • Prior experience supervising, mentoring, and coaching student employees.
