About this Position
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Serves as the primary communications and media relations contact for the institution. This role will help facilitate the implementation of OSUIT’s strategic marketing and communications plan, which includes media relations, promoting overall university strategy, aligning with OSU system communications teams, and reputation management. This individual will enhance OSUIT’s reputation with key internal and external audiences through their strategic communication skills. Primary responsibility for developing strategic communications plans, writing content for news stories, media advisories, releases, articles, institute communications, policy communications and crisis/issues communications. The individual should demonstrate self-direction, creativity and strategic thinking in finding new opportunities to showcase OSUIT.
Required Qualifications
Education:
- Associate's degree required;
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, PR, Communications, Marketing or related discipline from an accredited college or university highly preferred.
Experience:
- Three to five years’ professional writing/editing experience.
- Media/Newsroom experience a plus.
- Proven history of demonstrating ethical and professional behavior.
- Understanding of grammar and proficiency with AP Style.
- Project management experience.
Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:
- Valid Oklahoma driver’s license will be required if conducting the functions of the position requires the use of a personal or university vehicle.
Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:
Skills and Abilities:
- Proficient with MS Office.
- Familiar with Canva, Adobe Express, Adobe Suite, Slate CRM software or similar platforms.
- Must demonstrate skills in writing and editing press releases and news articles in AP style, feature stories, news writing, web content, presentations, internal messaging and strategic communications.
- Ability to analyze complex ideas, internal and external stakeholders and multiple sources of information to develop communication strategies, effective messaging and content.
- Ability to take initiative as well as manage and meet multiple deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Demonstrated skills in project management, problem solving, teamwork and follow-through.
- Must be flexible, innovative, and self-motivated.
Communication Skills:
- This position requires exceptional communication skills both written and verbal.
- Strong verbal communication skills to include one-on-one, group presentation and facilitation skills are essential to candidate's success.
- Excellent people skills and the ability to work with multiple contacts or stakeholders for projects.
- Excellent written communication and listening skills and customer responsiveness are essential. Must be able to continually incorporate feedback, ideas and requests into the written pieces.
- Must possess excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively recognize and resolve conflict.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, PR, Communications, Marketing or related discipline from an accredited college or university highly preferred.
