About this Position

The Student Union Maintenance Department operates 24/7. As needed, staff may work 8–12 hour shifts, including weekends and holidays. Perform and maintain a preventive maintenance program for the mechanical systems of the Student Union (SU) and its other buildings and entities. Complete assigned work orders and perform maintenance and repairs to water distribution and chilled water circulation systems. Ensure preventive maintenance is conducted on all HVAC, refrigeration, and water systems. Inform the Supervisor of needs related to maintaining appropriate supplies and equipment. Ensure all mechanical systems and equipment are in good, safe working condition. Perform maintenance and repair work, including some painting, for the Student Union (SU) and its other buildings and entities.

This position requires 12-hour shifts and holiday work and involves heavy manual labor. The incumbent must have the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and more than 50 pounds occasionally; move from one area to another without hindrance; work on ladders and scaffolds at heights of up to 40 feet; and work on roofs and entrance porticoes. All other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High School/GED (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
  • Building Maintenance Mechanic I

    • High school diploma/GED and two (2) years' experience in a building trade; or the equivalent of 600 hours Vocational/Technical education in a related building trade field.
    • Highly developed ability to observe and take note, good communication skills, ability to follow instructions closely, ability to work with very little supervision.
    • Ability to access tight spaces to perform job, pass a respirator fit test, and wear full face respirator for extended periods. May need to climb and/or work from stairs, ladders, scaffold, etc. for extended periods. Ability to work in a squat position or on knees for extended periods.
    • Broad general mechanical/electrical/electronic background. General building skill experience (i.e. carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, etc.).
    • Ability to become proficient in the use of Aim Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software and the use of mobile technology.
  • Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:

    Valid Driver's license - before hire

Preferred Qualifications

  • Vocational/Technical
  • Vocational/Technical and three (3) years experience in a building trade; or the equivalent of 600 hours Vocational/Technical education in a related building trade field with additional one (1) year prior related work experience.
