About this Position

Installation, operation, and maintenance of ventilating and air conditioning equipment from 1/8 horsepower vent units to 35-ton rooftop units. Read engineering blueprints and install equipment, start up, debug, and make functional. Analyze mechanical, electrical, piping, and refrigeration problems in domestic, commercial, and research-type refrigeration systems.

Make repairs or recommend solutions if repairs are not feasible or not possible in-house. Analyze mechanical, electrical, and gas problems in gas-fired furnaces, hot water boilers, steam boilers, and rooftop units. Make repairs or recommend solutions. Troubleshoot problems dealing with complex controls on non-refrigeration systems such as vacuum systems, fluid pumping systems, air compressors, dryers, humidifiers, steam heating systems, and pressure-reducing stations. Repair the faulty components and make the systems functional.

Support Facilities Management departments as required. An employee in this position is required to be on rotating standby for emergencies and/or any other event after 5 p.m. weekdays, weekends, and holidays. An employee in this position is required to work overtime when work requires. An employee in this position is required to work shift work when work can't be accomplished during regular hours, and when the Management staff deems necessary.

Must be able to perform snow and ice removal tasks and respond at any time of the day or night when scheduled by management, regardless of the weather conditions. Some irregular and extra hours as needed for projects and emergencies. Emergencies frequently involve difficult working conditions.

This may require work during non-business hours, which include evenings, Saturdays, Sundays, and when the University is closed. The incumbent will be required to provide their own basic hand tools and maintain them in good working condition. The position may be exposed to electrical shock when troubleshooting control circuits. Work may be performed around high-pressure refrigerant systems, in cramped quarters, dirty, hot, and cold environments. High-temperature lines present burn hazards.

This position is heavy in manual labor and requires the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and in excess of 50 pounds occasionally.

Must use appropriate personal protective equipment as required (gloves, safety glasses, etc.). These items are not for personal use.

Required Qualifications

  • High School/GED (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
  • HVAC Refrig Mech Tech I - Two years prior successful work experience in building trades or completion of post-secondary education in Mechanical HVAC.

    HVAC Refrig Mech Tech II - Three years prior work experience in HVAC, or completion of post-secondary education in Mechanical HVAC plus one year of experience

    HVAC Refrig Mech Tech Lead - Four years of prior work experience in HVAC, or completion of post-secondary education in Mechanical HVAC plus Two years experience. 

  • Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:

    HVAC Refrig Mech Tech I - Lead - Must obtain a certified EPA refrigerant usage card within one year of hire and must maintain it after hire.

    Have before hire and maintain after hire, a valid driver's license. A valid driver's license must be maintained for the operation of an OSU vehicle, which is required in the performance of job duties as assigned.

    HVAC Refrig Mech Tech Lead - Mechanical unlimited journeyman's license required before hire.

  • Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:

    Blueprint reading. Controls and electrical schematic reading. This position is heavy in manual labor and requires the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and in excess of 50 pounds occasionally.

    Ability to become proficient in the use of "AiM" computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software and the use of mobile technology.
