Work that matters
As an ARC Grant Funded Research Fellow (A), you will contribute to the Australian Research Council Discovery Project “Consoling the Self: Historical Grief Strategies and the Healing Arts” (2026–2029).
The successful applicant will work in a team with the Chief Investigator (CI) and PhD candidate to analyse the various strategies of self-consolation in antiquity, and how this neglected sub-genre may contribute to new strategies for coping with loss. There will be opportunities to co-publish with the CI.

The team
Reporting to the Professor as Chief Investigator, you will join a collaborative research team including a PhD candidate, working within the discipline of Classics and Ancient Philosophy. The team is focused on producing innovative, interdisciplinary research with relevance to both historical scholarship and modern perspectives on emotional wellbeing.

To join our community and thrive in this role, you will likely have the following skills and experience:
Experience
- A PhD in Classics, Ancient Philosophy, or a related field (those who have recently submitted and are awaiting final assessment of their thesis on a related topic may be considered)
- Strong knowledge of ancient Greek and/or Latin
- Familiarity with Hellenistic philosophy and/or the history of emotions
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a research team
- High-level written, analytical, and communication skills
Desirable:
- Interest in the social and intellectual role of grief in antiquity
- Ability to read one or more modern research languages (French, German, Italian)
- Willingness to supervise postgraduate students
