Suburban Connect is a consortium of global leaders in tunnelling including CPB Contractors, Ghella and Acciona Construction delivering the Tunnels South package on Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East, on behalf of Suburban Rail Loop Authority (SRLA).

We have a broad range of roles available to build our diverse and inclusive workforce, including construction and engineering, planning and environmental management, corporate support, administration, communications and many others.

SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill is now under construction, with tunnelling to start in 2026 and trains to be running by 2035.

Suburban Connect is constructing the 16kms of tunnels between Cheltenham and Glen Waverley using 4 tunnel boring machines and a range of excavation methods. The works also include 55 cross passages, 2 tunnel portal structures, 2 station box excavations and associated supports.

About the opportunity:

Suburban Connect are seeking a Field Based Safety Manager to lead on-site safety teams in supporting the projects Civil / Surface scope across four key Precincts. The role will be critical in supporting the broader Construction Delivery team in embedding safe systems of work and promoting a positive safety culture.

Key responsibilities of the role include: 

  • Provide guidance and advice in line with Suburban Connect's Safety Management System and the Victorian OHS Legislative framework .
  • Serve as the main Safety lead for Construction Delivery teams for their in-field activities. 
  • Manage and support a team of on-site safety professionals (Senior Safety Advisors, Safety Advisors, and Coordinators).
  • Assign and monitor safety responsibilities across projects.
  • Champion construction risk assessment processes, including collaborating with Precinct teams to ensure a adequate planning through Construction Risk Assessment Workshops.
  • Provide a point for escalation and support for in-field safety resources along with other delivery personnel. 
  • Oversee incident investigations and corrective actions.
  • Monitor and support safety performance reporting for senior leads across Precincts.
  • Partner with stakeholders / subcontractors to ensure safety compliance.
  • Build relationships with the Project's client and regulatory bodies.
  • Integrate safety protocols into project planning and execution.
  • Lead audit and certification activities from a in-field perspective.
  • Recommend and implement safety lead practices and innovations.
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide guidance to safety resources.
  • Perform other tasks as directed by the Safety Operations Manager.

 

Experience, Skills and Behavioural Competencies:

 

  • Formal qualifications in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent
  • Safety Lead Auditor Qualification
  • Safety and Health experience (5 + years) in Construction and/or heavy industry and high-risk workplaces.
  • Management and leadership (5 years)
  • Knowledge in Safety Management Systems and the Victorian OHS Legislative Framework
