About North East Link 

The Spark Consortium has been selected to deliver the Central Package of the North East Link Project - Victoria's biggest road project.

The Spark Consortium’s Design and Construction Contractor - which comprises Webuild, CPB Contractors, GS Engineering and Construction and China Construction Oceania - will deliver the twin three-lane tunnels and key interchanges for the project.

The Central Package will be delivered as a Public Private Partnership and provides three-lane twin tunnels that will close the missing link in Melbourne’s freeway network from the M80 Ring Road to an upgraded Eastern Freeway, reducing journey times and diverting heavy vehicles away from local roads. Up to 135,000 vehicles will use North East Link every day, reducing congestion in the north-east while maintaining local roads. 

About the Opportunity 

We are seeking a TBM Shift Engineer to join our Tunnel team on SPARK North East Link.

You will be providing on-site technical and engineering support to a tunneling crew, monitoring and supporting the TBM's operation, ensuring quality control and safety, managing logistical aspects like materials and reports, and troubleshooting operational issues to maintain continuous and efficient tunnel excavation. Key duties include tracking operational parameters, overseeing segmental lining installation and grouting, conducting quality checks, and preparing shift reports for the project team. 

Please note this role will require to do Shift work, which will include working on a continuous roster of days and nights.

This role will be accountable for:  

  • Development and management of daily construction records & reporting
  • To provide on-site engineering support to assist in the achievement of the required objectives of the project.  
  • Monitoring key construction requirements and implementing prompt corrective action if required, to ensure they are achieved in line with agreed specifications.  
  • Assisting with preparing method statements, risk assessments and preparing site records
  • Coordinate and administer construction engineering activities to ensure that projects are implemented in accordance with plans, designs and specification
  • Monitor and adjust TBM operational parameters based on the ground and machine conditions, track advance rates, and conduct audits of tunnel operations to ensure adherence to the project's permit-to-tunnel requirements and optimize performance. 
  • Conduct quality control checks, monitor the installation of precast tunnel lining segments, and oversee activities like backfill grouting and soil conditioning to ensure high standards are met. 
  • Implement and enforce safety protocols, monitor permits, and ensure all work complies with the project's safety, quality, environmental, and engineering procedures.
  • Fill in shift production reports, track material usage, record shift activities and progress, and report on safety, quality, delays summary, and environmental issues to the senior engineering team. 
  • Provide immediate feedback to Tunnel Foremen and TBM Operators, supervise activities, and assist in the training and development of TBM shift personnel.

 Minimum requirements for this role are:  

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Mechanical, or a related engineering field
  • Prior experience in underground construction is preferred, particularly with TBM operations, is beneficial. 
  • Strong communication skills for reporting and coordination, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to work effectively under pressure
