The Project

The Western Highway Duplication (WHD) Project will upgrade a 12 km section of highway between Buangor and Ararat by adding an extra lane in each direction. As a key freight and tourism route in Western Victoria, the project will improve road safety, traffic flow, and travel reliability.

The updated design enhances safety and efficiency, reduces environmental impacts, and meets current road design and safety standards.

Your opportunity 

The Senior Environmental Advisor will play a key role in leading, coordinating and driving environmental performance across the Western Highway Duplication Project. Working closely with the Environmental Manager and project delivery teams, you will be responsible for supporting environmental compliance, risk management, approvals, monitoring, reporting and continuous improvement initiatives to ensure the project is delivered in accordance with legislation, project approvals and contractual requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Environmental Manager, the Senior Environmental Advisor will be accountable for:

• Reviewing, implementing and continually improving the Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) and associated environmental management documentation.
• Providing timely and practical environmental advice, training and support to project personnel, subcontractors, and management teams.
• Supporting the Environmental Manager in developing and delivering environmental training / project inductions and awareness programs for frontline leaders, project teams and sub-contractors.
• Coordinating environmental inspections, monitoring programs, audits and compliance reporting activities.
• Supporting the management of environmental incidents, investigations, corrective actions and continual improvement initiatives.
• Assisting the Environmental Manager and design team in reviewing environmental design deliverables and ensuring environmental requirements are integrated into project planning and delivery.
• Supporting the Environmental Manager and Commercial Team in the development of subcontractor scopes, environmental requirements and prequalification processes.
• Establishing and maintaining positive, collaborative relationships with client representatives, regulators, subcontractors, senior project management and site supervision teams.
• Undertaking environmental field activities, including inspections, water monitoring, soil sampling and compliance verification activities as required.

Our Minimum Requirements

• Demonstrated experience in a senior environmental role on major road or civil infrastructure projects within Victoria.
• Sound understanding of Victorian environmental legislation, approvals and compliance requirements, with the ability to interpret and apply legislative, contractual and project-specific obligations.
• Demonstrated experience developing, reviewing and implementing erosion and sediment control measures and plans.
• Experience implementing Cultural Heritage Management Plans (CHMPs) and managing compliance with associated conditions.
• Experience managing environmental risks associated with construction activities, including erosion and sediment control, water quality, contaminated land, flora and fauna, noise and vibration.
• Demonstrated ability to prepare environmental management documentation, compliance reports, permits, approvals and project records.
• Ability to work autonomously in the field undertaking environmental inspections, audits, water quality monitoring and soil sampling activities.
• Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to effectively influence and collaborate with project teams, subcontractors, clients and regulatory agencies.
• A proactive approach to problem solving and continuous improvement.
