The Opportunity

Thiess is seeking an experienced and driven Operations Manager - Mining to lead safe, efficient, and productive mining operations across our sites. This senior leadership role is responsible for delivering production targets, cost control, workforce leadership, and continuous improvement while maintaining the highest standards of safety and compliance.

About The Role

Reporting to the General Manager, you will play a key role in shaping operational strategy, driving performance, and building a strong, engaged operations team. The Operations Manager – Mining will provide strategic leadership and oversight across multiple mining projects, ensuring operational excellence, compliance with Thiess’ vision, values, policies, and procedures, and achievement of safety, financial, and production objectives. This role supports Project Managers, drives continuous improvement, and manages operational, commercial, and legal risks while fostering strong client relationships.

Additionally, you will:

  • Champion a proactive safety culture and ensure compliance with company and legislative requirements.
  • Lead and manage all aspects of mining operations, including drill & blast, load & haul, and mine services.
  • Provide leadership and direction to ensure projects meet safety, production, cost, and quality objectives.
  • Be responsible for demonstrating Thiess’ values and leadership philosophy.
  • Stay committed to meeting performance targets and proactively mitigating risks whilst delivering tangible outcomes that seamlessly align with Thiess’ overall strategic direction.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance productivity, efficiency, and cost performance.
  • Develop, coach, and mentor operational leaders to build a high performing team.
  • Contribute to strategic planning, forecasting, and long term operational improvement initiatives.
  • Provide strategic oversight of project budgets, forecasts, and financial performance.
  • Maintain strong client relationships and identify opportunities for additional work.

About You

  • Posses a WA Quarry Manager's Certificate of Competency
  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant technical discipline.
  • Extensive experience in open cut mining with demonstrated leadership at a senior operational level.
  • Excellent safety leadership with a track record of building strong safety cultures.
  • Commercially astute, with experience managing budgets, costs, and operational performance.
  • Proven ability to lead large, diverse teams in a dynamic operational environment.
  • Proficiency in cost management systems and financial analysis.
  • Ability to engage constructively and respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Passion for developing people and fostering growth.
  • Ability to shift between strategic ‘big picture’ thinking and detailed operational focus.
