What you’ll do

When onsite support is required, you will work predominantly on an 8/6 roster, with flexibility for 5/2 periods depending on project needs. During Brisbane‑based periods, this role operates Monday to Friday from our South Bank office.

This is an outstanding opportunity for a motivated geologist to expand their influence across multiple operations, contribute to corporate technical initiatives, and play a key role in driving geological excellence across Thiess.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide day‑to‑day operational leadership, feedback and coaching to support allocated geological activities.
  • Build strong working relationships with Technical Services and site‑based geology teams.
  • Demonstrate exceptional safety behaviours and ensure full compliance with site procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate geological and operational records in line with company, statutory and contractual obligations.
  • Drive the implementation of the Thiess Global Geological Governance Framework, including audits and action management.
  • Peer review geological models for new business opportunities and project extensions.
  • Prepare technical reports that outline key geological risks and opportunities for new and existing projects.
  • Contribute to the development of site‑specific geological management plans and standards.

What you’ll bring

You are a tertiary‑qualified Geologist with a solid background in large‑scale open‑cut mining and a strong understanding of coal geology, production operations and mining principles. With at least three years of operational experience, you bring technical capability in geological modelling, mine planning software and regulatory requirements, along with the ability to interpret geological insights and translate them into operational and commercial outcomes. Your strong communication skills, stakeholder influence and proficiency across key technical systems enable you to work effectively across diverse teams and contribute meaningfully to both site and corporate initiatives.

You will bring:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Geology and a minimum of 3 years’ operational experience in large‑scale open‑cut mining.
  • Coal mine geology and production experience, with geological modelling exposure highly regarded.
  • Strong technical capability in Maptek Vulcan (or similar), mining principles and operational design concepts.
  • Ability to interpret technical outcomes, link them to financial impacts and apply strong regulatory knowledge.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder‑influence skills with proficiency across the MS Office suite.
