What you’ll do
Thiess is seeking an experienced Principal Mining Estimator to lead the delivery of accurate, competitive and innovative estimates for new mining projects across Australia.
Reporting to the Manager – New Work, this role plays a critical leadership position within the New Work team, mentoring estimators and partnering closely with Technical Services, Commercial and Project teams to enable successful tender outcomes and long‑term project performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop accurate, practically oriented estimates and tenders for new mining projects
- Partner with mine planning engineers to optimise mine plans for tender submissions
- Analyse direct costs, overheads and operational performance to inform tender pricing
- Provide commercial input into new services development and business cases
- Coach, mentor and lead Senior Mining Estimators and Estimators
- Support project teams with budget development and cost analysis
- Ensure compliance with commercial, legal and governance requirements
- Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders, consultants and clients
- Champion safety, innovation and continuous improvement across the estimating function
What you’ll bring
You will be a highly experienced mining professional with strong commercial acumen and a collaborative leadership style. You bring a deep understanding of open‑cut mining operations and ideally have experience delivering successful tenders in a mining or contracting environment.
- Tertiary qualifications in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering or Surveying
- 10+ years’ experience in a mining engineering or estimating environment
- Experience working on large‑scale open‑cut mining operations
- Strong understanding of mine design, scheduling and estimating systems (including CATS)
- Understanding of contractual terms and conditions and applicability
- High‑level analytical skills with strong attention to detail
- Advanced Microsoft Office capability
- Proven ability to link technical outcomes with financial performance
- A proactive leadership mindset with strong stakeholder engagement skills
