The Opportunity

The Structural Virology lab recently elucidated elusive structures of viruses causing disease in insects and humans. The unexpected architecture of these viral pathogens posed key new questions on how they assemble such complex infectious particles. The Research Fellow position is an opportunity to lead a research project aiming to answer these key questions using cryo-EM, X-ray crystallography and/or molecular modelling as the main approaches. Ultimately, the research aims to elucidate biological mechanisms unique in the virus world, and guide the design of new biotech and biomedical tools.

Your key responsibilities will be:

  • Proactively undertaking a range of research and contributing to the production of conference papers and publications from that research
  • Co-supervising, or where appropriate, supervising, major honours or postgraduate research projects within the field of the research
  • Occasionally preparing research-related material for teaching or other purposes
  • Monitoring administrative functions in the area of expertise
  • Attending meetings associated with research or the work of the organisational unit to which the research is connected

The successful candidates will demonstrate expertise in cryo-electron microscopy and a strong interest in molecular virology - or vice versa. Outstanding candidates with other areas of expertise related to structural biology will be considered. These positions are suited to highly motivated individuals who have completed a doctoral qualification in biochemistry, structural biology or virology, or an honours degree in the relevant discipline and/or progress towards a doctorate in the relevant discipline.

The Structural Virology lab has access to a state-of-the-art cryo-EM facility within Monash University and to high-quality beamlines at the neighbouring Australian Synchrotron.

Diversity is one of our greatest strengths at Monash. We encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, culturally and linguistically diverse people, people with disabilities, neurodiverse people, and people of all genders, sexualities, and age groups.

Join the pursuit of our purpose to build a better future for ourselves and our communities – #ChangeIt with us.

Monash avidly supports flexible and hybrid working arrangements. We have a range of policies in place enabling staff to combine work and personal commitments. This includes supporting parents

Your employment is contingent upon the satisfactory completion of all pre-employment and/or background checks required for the role, as determined by the University.

Your application must address the selection criteria. Please refer to 'How to apply for Monash Jobs'.
