The Opportunity

The Environmental Informatics Hub is a new initiative of the Faculty of IT at Monash University that brings together researchers from the Faculty of IT with expertise in artificial intelligence, human–computer interaction, software engineering, and cybersecurity to help reverse the biodiversity crisis. By enabling ambitious, interdisciplinary, and impact-driven research, the Hub aims to become a global leader in developing digital and data-driven solutions for biodiversity that account for diverse societal needs.

We are seeking a strategic and entrepreneurial Research Manager to support the growth, visibility, and delivery of the Hub's mission. This is a foundational role for a highly motivated individual who can work across uncertainty, coordinate initiatives, and turn vision into delivery.

Working closely with the Hub Director, the Manager will take operational ownership of key activities, engage with stakeholders, and provide core administrative and project management support to a small but dynamic team.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with the Director to implement the Hub’s strategy and roadmap aligned with its mission to address biodiversity loss through responsible research in AI and other disciplines
  • Take initiative in coordinating and supporting the delivery of cross-disciplinary projects, including scheduling, logistics, timelines, and reporting
  • Proactively engage with internal and external stakeholders (academic, government, NGO, industry), building and maintaining strong collaborative relationships for the Environmental Informatics Hub
  • Identify opportunities for the Hub’s growth and visibility, including support for funding proposals, events, and public-facing initiatives
  • Contribute to a cohesive and positive team culture within the Hub, working across researchers, students, and professional staff
  • Coordinate workshops, meetings, internal communications, and governance processes as needed

The successful candidate will have:

  • Proven ability to manage multi-stakeholder projects or initiatives, preferably in a research, academic, or innovation environment
  • Strong organisational and project management skills, with a proactive approach to coordination, delivery, and problem-solving
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in ambiguous and evolving contexts, with a readiness to lead and adapt as needed
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a track record of building trust and managing diverse stakeholder relationships
  • A collaborative and entrepreneurial mindset, with enthusiasm for contributing to high-impact environmental research

An interest or experience in environmental, biodiversity, or informatics-related research or policy will be well regarded.
