The Opportunity

The Research Fellow will be a motivated and talented computational scientist and a key member of Monash University ice sheet modelling research team and SAEF’s Theme 1: Climate Processes and Change. This position is funded by the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy through the Australian Community Climate and Earth System Simulator National Research Infrastructure (ACCESS-NRI), and is focused on coupling the Ice-sheet and Sea-level System Model (ISSM) with the ACCESS-AM3 atmosphere model. The long-term goal is to integrate this coupling into the broader ACCESS Earth System Model 3 (ACCESS-ESM3), in close collaboration with the ACCESS-NRI team. The project will answer fundamental scientific questions about the interactions between ice sheets, climate and sea level, develop key modelling technologies for ice sheet research and significantly contribute to Australian climate research.

We encourage applications from candidates with strong computational modelling, physics, mathematics and/or scientific programming backgrounds, ideally with experience in Earth System modelling, Earth science or related disciplines.

Ideal technical requirements:

  • Experience in physical system modelling including finite element modelling
  • Experience working with large codebases in open source software environments
  • Proficient user of HPC environments including MPI
  • Experience working with geospatial data

Desirable technical requirements:

  • Experience with the ISSM ice sheet model or other ice sheet models
  • Experience with the UM and/or ACCESS-AM2 atmosphere model, or other atmosphere models
  • Strong background in mathematics, physics, engineering or related field
  • Experience in scientific computing, including C/C++, fortran, python, or MATLAB
  • Version control and package management including Github
