The Opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Lawyer to join our dynamic in-house legal team within the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) at Monash in its Research & Education stream. The OGC’s Research & Education stream supports the University’s cutting-edge research, with a focus on major domestic & international research projects and collaborations, funding and grant agreements, research service agreements and consultancies, clinical trials, Intellectual Property-related advice and University staff and student engagement matters.

As a Senior Lawyer, you will deliver timely, practical and strategic legal advice across the University’s research and education activities, consistent with the ethical standards of a corporate legal practice. You will manage complex matters in a high-volume environment, prioritising effectively and aligning advice with the University’s strategic objectives and risk appetite. The role involves high-quality legal research, drafting and negotiating a broad range of agreements, including research collaborations, commercial contracts and education-related arrangements. You will provide expert guidance on regulatory frameworks, including TEQSA, ESOS, student recruitment compliance and work-integrated learning. Building strong internal and external relationships, you will foster partnerships that support innovation and research excellence, mentor colleagues on research and education legal matters, and provide specialist support and backfill within the Office of General Counsel as required.

As the successful candidate you will be a qualified legal practitioner with at least five years’ post admission experience, ideally in Intellectual Property, the university sector or a research-related field (eg Medical Research Institute). You enjoy working in a complex environment and adapting to a diverse range of matters and priorities on a daily basis. You have a proven ability to work autonomously and understand the importance of delivering exceptional customer service to key internal stakeholders and developing respectful and trusting relationships. Your excellent communication and written skills along with your strong stakeholder management skills will see you succeed in this role.
