The Opportunity

Join a team of dedicated professionals at the Monash Animal Research Platform  in Gippsland and play a vital role in supporting world-class research while ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare.

This is a unique opportunity to join Monash University in a role currently seconded to our trusted facility management partner, where your work will directly support researchers and clients across a diverse landscape of translational science.

About the Role

As an Animal Technician, you will provide hands-on care and technical support for research animals in accordance with approved protocols, legislation, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Your attention to detail, ethical approach, and commitment to animal wellbeing will be essential in enabling the delivery of high-quality research services.

Reporting to the Senior Animal Technologist or Coordinator, you will work under routine supervision as part of a collaborative, professional team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver expert daily animal care, including feeding, watering, cleaning, enrichment, and maintaining optimal hygiene standards
  • Support animal breeding and provide technical services in line with approved workflows and SOPs
  • Monitor animal health and environments, promptly identifying and escalating concerns
  • Maintain accurate, timely records relating to animals, environments, and movements
  • Uphold workplace health and safety standards, identifying and reporting hazards or incidents
  • Contribute constructively to continuous improvement, investigations, and facility operations
  • Maintain the highest ethical standards and compliance with relevant legislation and regulatory requirements
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with colleagues, management, and stakeholders to support a high-performing team

What You’ll Bring

  • Qualifications: Completion or near completion of an Associate Diploma of Applied Science (Animal Technology),or other relevant qualification, or an equivalent combination of training and experience in a relevant research or animal care environment. 
  • Experience: Working knowledge of animal care and husbandry; experience with animal technical procedures, would be highly regarded
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and codes, including: 
    • Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 (Vic) and Regulations
    • Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Confidence working both independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Sound computer literacy and experience with accurate record keeping
