The Opportunity

The Senior Financial Accountant – Assets and Financial Reporting applies specialised accounting expertise to deliver critical financial services that support the Corporate Finance Division’s strategy. Reporting directly to the Group Financial Controller, this vital role manages the University’s asset and lease accounting function. You will ensure General Ledger integrity across asset balances, direct complex financial analysis, oversee external audit requirements and prepare annual disclosures for the University and its controlled entities.

This position leads a dedicated team of two staff and works closely with diverse internal and external stakeholders to deliver compliant, timely financial reporting aligned with Accounting Standards, Financial Regulations and Standing Directions.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Strategic Financial Capability: Developing solutions to improve financial processes, responding to complex issues/trends, and preparing submissions for University Committees.
  • Assets & Lease Management: Managing month-end and year-end reporting for leased, owned tangible, and intangible assets, alongside overseeing capital projects (including assets under construction), stocktakes, and complex lease arrangements.
  • Compliance & Technical Advisory: Implementing and rolling out new Accounting Standards and legislative amendments, while proactively managing risk issues associated with asset reporting.
  • Team Leadership & Collaboration: Developing and mentoring a high-performing team of two direct reports while building trusted partnerships with business units to provide expert financial advice across varying levels of financial literacy.

Key Selection Criteria

Education/Qualifications:

  • A degree in business or accounting, with current CA/CPA accreditation.
  • Extensive experience in accounting and financial reporting within a complex, asset-intensive environment (specifically asset and leasing accounting).

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Proven experience working with SAP (or equivalent large financial system), with direct exposure to the Assets module.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of accounting standards and legislation, with the ability to apply them to a large, complex operating environment.
  • Strong leadership capabilities with a track record of managing, motivating, and developing a high-performing team.
  • Highly developed planning and organizational skills, including a demonstrated ability to establish priorities, allocate resources, and hit strict deadlines.
  • Advanced analytical, numeracy, and problem-solving skills, with exceptional computer literacy (specifically Microsoft Excel and reporting software).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to negotiate and build consensus across all organizational levels.
