The Opportunity

The Monash Institute of Railway Technology (IRT) is the premier track and vehicle research centre in Australia and an internationally recognised leader in railway engineering solutions. 100% industry-funded through contractual work with over 150 global client organisations, IRT translates cutting-edge applied research into real-world industrial impact.

We are seeking a Senior Full Stack Engineer to join IRT’s Innovation Team. In this role, you will lead the research, development, deployment, and management of software platforms and AI models powered by smart sensors across rolling stock and track systems. You will play a pivotal role in creating client-facing applications and real-time decision-support tools that convert complex sensor data into actionable insights for railway operators.

Key Responsibilities

  • Full Stack & AI Platform Development: Design, build, and deploy end-to-end AI applications, backend APIs, data pipelines, and user interfaces that enable data visualisation, analysis, and decision-making from condition monitoring systems.
  • Edge & Computer Vision Integration: Deploy AI, computer vision, laser profiling, LiDAR, and camera-based systems on edge devices operating under constrained resources or intermittent connectivity.
  • Advanced Signal & Sensor Processing: Implement advanced real-time data processing techniques, sensor fusion (multimodal data including inertial, LiDAR, radar, and imaging), parallel processing, multithreading, and GPU/distributed computing.
  • Software Governance & MLOps: Establish mature product development practices, including CI/CD automation, software architecture standards, testing protocols, data traceability, and model confidence metrics.
  • Project Delivery & Client Engagement: Lead assigned project scopes and technical deliverables to ensure completion within budget and timeline while building strong relationships with clients and industry partners.
  • Field Support & Operations: Provide expert technical support during system commissioning, deployment, and operational troubleshooting, including occasional travel for site visits.

About You

  • Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with relevant subsequent experience, postgraduate qualifications, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Full Stack Proficiency: Demonstrated expertise in end-to-end software development, including backend services, APIs, databases, front-end interfaces, and tools such as Python, Flask, Docker, AWS, and GitLab.
  • AI & Computer Vision Experience: Proven experience with computer vision systems, machine learning workflows, MLOps, and edge processing optimisation.
  • Multimodal Sensor Expertise: Hands-on experience ingesting, filtering, and preprocessing multimodal sensor data (e.g., LiDAR, radar, inertial, imaging).
  • Project & Stakeholder Management: Excellent analytical problem-solving skills, with a track record of managing technical project deadlines and communicating complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
  • Operational Readiness: Flexibility to travel within Australia and overseas, perform field work/out-of-hours shifts as required, and satisfy pre-employment railway medical and drug screenings
