The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity exists for an outstanding early career scholar to join the Faculty of Law. The Monash Law Faculty was established over 60 years ago to be a different kind of law school, with a pioneering spirit, an enterprising and inclusive approach, and a deep commitment to access to justice in all of its forms. We aim to produce talented legal thinkers who have strong ethical, forensic and practical legal skills that can be applied to creatively solve real-world problems. We invest in premium facilities worthy of our world-class students and staff, such as our renowned clinical sites, state-of-the art moot court, and contemporary, student-centred learning environments.
The Research Fellow will be based in the Warren Centre for Civil Justice. As the successful candidate you will work with a team on Redesigning Digital Justice, an ARC Discovery Project on improving the design methods and technologies used in online hearings. The project brings together leading Law and Human-Computer Interaction researchers at Monash University.
The project aims to bring advances in human-computer interaction to the forefront of online justice systems. We will centre the needs and experiences of litigants in designing effective systems and processes and developing a set of design principles, methods, and technologies for online hearings. This work tackles the challenge of creating systems consistent with legal standards acceptable to justice institutions and actors and inclusive of stakeholders, particularly people with disabilities.
To be appointable into this role you must hold a degree in law and a doctoral qualification in the relevant discipline area (e.g. law, social science, sociology) or equivalent qualifications or research experience and demonstrated expertise in civil justice research, particularly in relation to such topics as self-represented litigants and/or technology in courts and tribunals.
There is flexibility in the program to accommodate a range of different skills and experiences the Research Fellow might bring, including but not limited to qualitative research experience; experience in co-production, co-design, human-centred design or participatory research methods; and legal practising experience relevant to civil justice, particularly in connection with court and/or tribunal hearings.
