  • Help shape the future of architectural education, research and creative practice
  • Provide collaborative academic leadership within Monash Art, Design and Architecture
  • Join a globally connected department engaging Melbourne, Australia and the Indo-Pacific

The Opportunity

Join the Department of Architecture within the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (MADA) as an Associate Professor and Deputy Head of Department, contributing to excellence in education, research, creative practice and engagement.

Working closely with the Head of Department, you will provide internal academic leadership, support staff development and coordinate the people, processes and resources needed to deliver the Department’s strategic priorities. This is an opportunity for an accomplished architectural academic or practitioner with strong organisational judgement, a collaborative approach and a commitment to strengthening the culture and performance of an ambitious department.

You will work with Course Directors, program leaders, unit coordinators and professional staff to support coherent curricula and high-quality teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Your responsibilities will include coordinating academic workload and staffing plans, teaching resources and space planning, alongside assessment, moderation, program review and professional accreditation processes.

The role also supports a productive research and creative-practice culture through collaboration, mentoring, postgraduate supervision and the development of external funding and partnerships. You will supervise and mentor allocated staff, contribute to career development and workload equity, and help address complex staff and student matters through appropriate University processes.

As Deputy Head, you will support the implementation of departmental strategy, contribute to budget and resource planning, represent the Department when delegated, and act on behalf of the Head of Department under formally approved arrangements. Alongside these leadership responsibilities, you will sustain a significant contribution to teaching, research and disciplinary practice appropriate to a Level D academic appointment.

The successful candidate will hold a doctoral qualification in architecture or a relevant discipline, or have recognised significant professional experience and standing in architecture or the built environment. You will bring a strong record of scholarly, creative-practice or professional achievement; demonstrated teaching excellence; experience in academic leadership and operational coordination; and the ability to build consensus and implement academic change. Excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to collegiality, inclusion and staff and student development are essential.

The professorial appointment will be a continuing appointment in the department of Architecture and will include the role of Deputy head of department for an initial period of up to 3 years with opportunity for renewal.

About the Department of Architecture

The Department of Architecture is a globally connected community offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Architecture and Urban Planning and Design.

Our research and teaching converge around some of the most urgent issues of our time: advancing housing, social and environmental justice, innovating construction processes for accessibility and affordability, addressing the challenges of informal settlements and environmental repair, radically reducing carbon emissions and energy use, and imagining new spatial, technological, and cultural futures for the planet.  Combining scholarship with creative practice, we approach architecture as an agent of change, shaping a world that is more just, sustainable and beautiful.

Through our distinctive model of creative-practice impact, the Department of Architecture at Monash University tackles the major challenges facing society today with innovation, impact, and criticality. Our work is animated by a belief that architecture can be an agent of change—shaping a world that is more just, sustainable, and beautiful.

Together with our commitment to academic freedom, you will have access to quality research facilities, teaching spaces and international collaboration opportunities.
