The Opportunity

Join Monash University’s Department of Microbiology and help shape the future of microbiology research and education. This is an exciting opportunity for an accomplished academic to develop or lead an innovative research program, deliver outstanding teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programs, and contribute to the Department’s academic leadership and global reputation for excellence in biomedical research.

This position will be responsible for delivering engaging lectures, tutorials and practical classes, developing and coordinating curriculum, and providing high-quality teaching and assessment across undergraduate and postgraduate programs. You will supervise and mentor honours and higher degree by research students, contribute to postgraduate training, and foster an engaging and supportive learning environment. You will also develop and deliver a strong research program, producing high-quality publications, securing competitive external research funding and contributing to collaborative research projects, with opportunities to lead research teams. Through academic leadership, collegial collaboration and active engagement with the broader scientific community, you will contribute to the continued advancement and international standing of the discipline.

To be successful in this role you will have a doctoral qualification or equivalent standing in microbiology or a relevant discipline, with a strong record of research achievement, high-quality publications and success in securing external research funding. You will bring demonstrated tertiary teaching experience, including curriculum development and course coordination. A proven commitment to supervising higher degree by research students, alongside experience mentoring students and colleagues, is essential. You will also demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, a collaborative approach, and the ability to provide academic leadership and build productive relationships across the University and the wider scientific community.

Why join the Department of Microbiology?

The Department offers a dynamic research environment spanning fundamental discovery science through to highly translational research, providing opportunities to drive discoveries with real-world impact. The Department drives the generation of new knowledge across the full spectrum of microbiology, and the development of innovative strategies to combat current and future health and environmental challenges. As a key contributor to the Centre to Impact AMR (Antimicrobial Resistance), we are well positioned to advance research addressing the growing global challenge of antimicrobial resistance. Strong clinical partnerships with Victorian Hospitals further support collaboration across laboratory and clinical settings, creating opportunities to translate research findings into meaningful improvements in health outcomes.
