The Senior Consumer Scientist role plays a critical part in shaping how consumer thinking informs innovation across the business.

 

Reporting to the Senior Manager – Consumer Science and Sensory, this role spans both short-term commercial priorities and longer-term growth, bringing a strong consumer lens into how products, packaging and propositions are developed. This includes defining what will resonate with consumers, guiding how ideas are built and ensuring innovation programmes are grounded in robust, evidence-based insight.

 

Working across technical and commercial teams, the role connects consumer understanding with execution, influencing decisions that drive both immediate outcomes and the future innovation pipeline.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Develop consumer-led design rules for product and packaging, using established and emerging methodologies
  • Bring clear consumer direction into innovation and NPD, shaping pipelines, propositions and early-stage concepts
  • Guide product and pack development through structured inputs into concept and prototype design
  • Partner closely with technical and commercial teams to keep projects aligned, practical and progressing
  • Ensure innovation programmes leverage existing insights, data and internal knowledge before building new learning
  • Manage external consumer science and sensory partners to deliver quality outcomes aligned to business needs
  • Contribute to advancing how consumer science is applied across the business, including tools, frameworks and ways of working.

 

About You

 

  • Degree qualified in Food, Sensory, Psychology, Behavioural Science, Engineering or a related discipline
  • 10+ years’ experience across Consumer Science, Sensory and Consumer Insights within FMCG, ideally in beverages and multinational environments
  • Deep expertise in consumer, sensory and insight methodologies, with the ability to apply them to real commercial decisions
  • Proven experience developing and embedding new methodologies that have been adopted at scale
  • Strong capability in consumer trend mapping and translating insights into clear direction for innovation
  • Experience designing and running consumer testing frameworks to uncover meaningful product and technical insights
  • Demonstrated ability to influence business decisions through strategic insight and commercial judgement
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, comfortable working across technical, commercial and global teams
  • Able to navigate complexity and multiple stakeholders, keeping work progressing with clear direction
