About the role
Post graduate training in psychiatry in South Australia is organised by the South Australian Psychiatry Training Committee under the direction of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists' Committee for Training. The training occurs over 5 years, and consists of 3 stages; stage 1 a minimum of 12 months in Adult General Psychiatry. Stage 2 a minimum of 24 months in a range of experiences such as, Adult Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Consultation\Liaison Psychiatry, Old Age Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, Forensic Psychiatry and Addiction Disorders. In stage 3 the Trainee may choose to specialise in one of the above sub-specialty areas and training occurs over a minimum of 24 months.
An academic course covering all the important areas of psychiatry is provided. The formal training program is provided to all trainees for 3 hours per week during working hours. In addition, 4 hours of supervision per week is given to all trainees by experienced, qualified psychiatrists who have received training and accreditation in supervision. Lectures, seminars and tutorials are offered by over 80 specialists, covering a full range of psychiatric practice, including child and adolescent, family, adult, psychogeriatrics, forensic, substance abuse, rehabilitation, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, intensive care, post traumatic stress disorders, indigenous issues, consumer and carer perspectives and ethics.
