Are you passionate about supporting Aboriginal women, babies, and families through culturally safe and respectful maternity care? As an Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Care Trainee, you will play a vital role in improving health outcomes by working within a trusted and supportive primary health care team, delivering antenatal, birthing, and postnatal care that honours cultural traditions and promotes wellbeing.
About the Role:
As an Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Care Trainee (AMIC), you will work closely with midwives, doctors, and Aboriginal Health Workers to provide culturally appropriate maternity care. Your work will help increase access to services, support families in navigating referrals, and link them to community resources that promote health, stability, and connection. This role plays a key part in supporting the psycho-social wellbeing of families and ensuring culturally safe practices are embedded in every stage of care.
You will receive regular supervision, clinical guidance, and on-the-job training from experienced midwives, AMIC Practitioners, and medical officers. In return, you’ll offer your growing expertise in cultural traditions, community knowledge, and culturally responsive care, including providing limited delegated clinical care under supervision. This reciprocal learning and mutual respect for roles are at the heart of the AMIC model.
Your role will also serve as an essential bridge between Aboriginal families and the RMCLHN Aboriginal Health Team based in Berri, as well as local Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs). Working collaboratively with Clinical Midwives, Nurses, GPs, Aboriginal Health Workers, and Allied Health professionals, you’ll help ensure that families receive consistent, culturally grounded support throughout their pregnancy journey and beyond.
What We’re Looking For:
OPS4
- Currently holds a Certificate IV in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice (HLT40213).
- Able to undertake the Maternal and Infant Care Skill Set – Clinical (HLTSS00031) under the Diploma of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care (HLT50213).
OPS3

An unqualified trainee is employed at an OPS3 level and is required to complete a certificate IV in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice and Is also required to undertake the Maternal and Infant Care Skill Set – Clinical (HLTSS00031) under the Diploma of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care (HLT50213) as part of this role.
