About the role

This multi-class Pre-Analytical Operational Services Officer (OPS1/OPS2) role offers an opportunity to contribute to a fast-paced and patient-focused laboratory environment, with classification based on skills and experience. As part of the Pre-Analytical Services team, you will play a vital role in ensuring high-quality specimen collection, handling and preparation processes that directly support accurate and timely diagnosis and treatment for patients. Your responsibilities will include phlebotomy, specimen collection and management, preliminary specimen preparation, accurate data entry into Laboratory Information Systems and ensuring specimens are stored and transported under defined conditions.

Working within an integrated multidisciplinary team, you will provide a high standard of customer service and care to patients while managing internal and external enquiries professionally and efficiently. At the OPS1 level, training and development are key features of the role, with close direction provided to support skill growth and capability building. At the OPS2 level, you will demonstrate increased independence and confidence in delivering high-quality pre-analytical services. Across both levels, you will contribute to a culture of safety, accuracy and teamwork in delivering essential diagnostic support services.

About You

You are a reliable and patient-focused professional who thrives in high-throughput healthcare environments. With strong communication skills, a commitment to quality and a proactive approach to teamwork, you contribute to safe, efficient and confidential pre-analytical services. Classification (OPS1 or OPS2) will be based on your skills and experience.

  • Customer Service & Communication – Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated commitment to delivering positive, timely and accurate customer service. You liaise effectively with staff at all levels, listen respectfully to different perspectives and uphold strict patient confidentiality at all times.

  • Organisation, Accuracy & Work Ethic – Ability to prioritise competing tasks, work effectively under limited supervision (OPS1) or general direction (OPS2), and consistently produce a high standard of accurate work. You demonstrate reliability, sound attendance, strong attention to detail and an energetic, proactive approach to your role.

  • Experience & Technical Capability – Proven experience delivering quality customer service in high-throughput environments. For OPS2, greater than two years’ experience in a hospital or pathology specimen collection environment or pathology laboratory, with demonstrated knowledge of Laboratory Information Systems and NATA requirements.

  • Safety, Compliance & Professional Development – Sound knowledge of Work Health and Safety and infection control principles, with a clear understanding of confidentiality obligations. You are committed to continual professional development and contribute positively to a cooperative, team-based workplace culture.
