Walk Alongside Others in Recovery | Peer Specialist | Margaret Tobin Centre

At SA Health's Margaret Tobin Centre, we're looking for someone who knows firsthand what recovery takes — and wants to use that experience to support others through their own journey. As a full-time Peer Specialist embedded within the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network's inpatient mental health team at Flinders Medical Centre, you'll bring a perspective that transforms care from the inside out. This is an ongoing role where your lived experience isn't just welcomed — it's the reason you're here.

About the role:

Reporting to the Nurse Unit Manager, Peer Specialists will draw on their lived experience of mental health challenges, service use and recovery to support consumers and the clinical team to achieve improvement of treatment outcomes for the consumers.

Duties for the role will include:

  • Draw from personal lived experience of mental health challenges and recovery journey to role model recovery and act as a recovery champion,
  • Form authentic peer relationships with consumers by appropriately and purposefully sharing personal lived experience and understanding of the impact of mental health challenges, service use and recovery,
  • Work from a Peer Work (PW) values and principles-based practice to support consumers to progress towards their goals and aspirations,
  • Provide guidance and support to consumers as they self-define and self-determine their mental health experience, narratives and identities,
  • Work within MDT, advocating for individual and collective consumer needs & rights in the development of individual care plans and service delivery

About you:

  • Skills in building connected and authentic trusting relationships with consumers and in modelling relatable recovery pathways,
  • Strong advocacy and partnership building skills to apply in a clinical mental health environment working within multidisciplinary teams,
  • Understanding and/or experience of the challenges associated with experiencing acute mental illness and the implications for personal recovery,
  • Lived experience of accessing support and treatment through mental health services,
  • Experience in advocating for oneself and others experiencing symptoms related to or defined as acute mental illness
