What You'll Be Leading

As Chief Surgical Resident for the 2027 clinical year (contract through to 30 January 2028), you will sit at the centre of surgical operations at Lyell McEwin, working within the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network (NALHN). Your focus will span:

  • Coordinating the day-to-day clinical activities of the surgical resident and intern cohort across general and subspecialty surgical units
  • Providing senior clinical oversight on the ward, in theatre, and through acute surgical assessment
  • Acting as a key liaison between junior medical staff, registrars, nursing leadership, and surgical consultants
  • Contributing to quality improvement initiatives, patient safety reviews, and departmental education programs
What You Bring
  • Current AHPRA registration as a Medical Practitioner with no conditions affecting independent practice
  • Demonstrated experience at registrar level in a surgical discipline within an Australian public hospital setting
  • Proven ability to supervise and support junior medical staff in a high-volume inpatient environment
  • Sound understanding of surgical ward management, perioperative care, and acute surgical presentations
  • Strong communication and professional judgement in complex, time-pressured clinical situations
  • Familiarity with SA Health clinical governance frameworks or equivalent state health system experience

To be eligible for this position, you must have:

  • Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent,
  • Obtained a Specialist Qualification and is registrable as a Medical Practitioner with Specialist registration.

The Total Indicative Remuneration figure is calculated taking into account base salary, leave loading and superannuation as well as managerial allowances, professional development or any other allowances where appropriate.

In this role you will have strong interpersonal and communication skills which will enable you to successfully problem solve, resolve conflicts and negotiate, including the ability to engage in difficult conversations, whilst building and maintaining relationships. An ability to effectively manage multiple, diverse and competing priorities and demonstrated resilience within a stressful and complex environment is essential to this role.
