About the role

Are you ready to make a real difference by using your own lived experience with sexually diverse communities and gender identities? This role could be for you!

The Lived Experience Peer Specialist within our Gender Diversity Service utilises their own personal journey with the transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse community to provide empathy, support, and advocacy!

This position advocates for equal rights and opportunities for people of diverse sexualities and gender identities, while also working closely within a multidisciplinary team to improve community understanding of gender diversity.

Key duties of the role

• Draw from personal lived experience of gender diversity to role model and act as a gender diversity champion.
• Advocate for equal rights and opportunities for people of diverse sexualities and gender identities.
• Work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary team members and service providers to improve community understanding of gender diversity.
• Provide guidance and support to consumers as they self-define and self-determine their experience, narratives and identities.
• Form authentic peer relationships with consumers by appropriately and purposefully sharing personal lived experience and understanding.

Skills and Experience

• Lived experience of gender diversity during a childhood/adolescence OR lived experience as a carer of a young person (under 18 years) who is gender diverse.
• Experience encouraging/supporting consumers and/or their families/carers.
• Understanding of the issues common to gender diverse people and/or their families/carers.
• Ability to identify successful strategies for achieving healthy, positive living and communicate this to consumers who are gender diverse, their families/carers and service providers in group programs or individually.
• Skills in interacting with consumers who are gender diverse and their families/carers.
