Job Summary: The Access Services Library Night Assistant assists with closing duties during the hours of 10:00pm to 2:00am Sunday - Thursday for a total of 20 hours a week between Bruno, Gorgas, and Rodgers Libraries. This includes securing the library buildings at closing, confirming that all student assistants are on duty, assisting with patrons at all library service desks and being the point person for any emergency situations with UAPD or UA facilities personnel in the absence of the Night Operations Manager. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: assisting patrons with finding library materials, checking in/out materials, processing returned materials, answering phones, troubleshooting copier/printers, shelving, sorting carts, assisting with ILL processes as time permits, and acting as point person for UAPD and UA facilities personnel if problems arise in the building.
This position is also responsible for: conducting walk throughs of the building and reporting any issues or problems, ensuring the building is secure at closing and that all patrons have vacated the building, determining if all lights are turned off, contacting appropriate personnel to address emergency issues as necessary, ensuring compliance with library policies and procedures, and other duties as assigned.
Expected start date is January 7, 2026.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with students, faculty, staff, and community members. Proficient in the use of personal computers and MS Office software. Able to lift books and push/pull book carts.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Current University of Alabama Graduate student. Bachelor's Degree required.
Skills and Knowledge: Exceptional organizational and time management skills. Experience and familiarity with campus resources at UA. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and develop productive relationships. Ability to communicate with various constituencies (staff, faculty, and students). Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong work ethic. Leadership and team building experience. Working knowledge of basic office equipment, personal computers, and Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Microsoft Planner). Familiarity with data entry and general office procedures. Willingness to learn data collection and reporting. Desire to learn study skills and academic resources. Strong written and oral communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience coaching or mentoring peers. Experience in other roles (student assistant, student advisor, tutor) at the Capstone Center for Student Success. Highly motivated and innovative self-starter who collaborates well with others. Highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a plethora of students. Strong organizational and management skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks. Detail-oriented. Ability to work independently and adhere to deadlines. Effective oral and written communication skills verbally.
Enrollment Requirements: Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment. Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters. Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment. Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
