Eligibility: All Fixed-Term, Permanent or continuing appointment UNICEF staff members currently working in UNICEF worldwide.

Background

With support from UNICEF, the Government of The Gambia submitted its State Party Report on the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) to the CRC Committee in April 2024, nearly a decade after the previous report in 2014. The CRC Committee issued its Concluding Observations in February 2025, outlining key recommendations to strengthen child rights in The Gambia.
 
To ensure effective implementation of the CRC Concluding Observations, it is crucial to support the government to develop a clear plan that translates these recommendations into concrete actions. A central recommendation from the CRC Committee is the need to enhance awareness of the CRC and its Concluding Observations, while also strengthening national capacity on child rights. This requires building the capacity of government institutions and key stakeholders, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the Convention and its application in national policies and programs. Strengthening technical expertise and improving coordination among child protection actors are essential to advancing the rights and well-being of children in The Gambia.

Purpose of the Position

Under the direct supervision of the Deputy Representative and with the support of the Child Protection Officer, the Child Rights Specialist/ Officer on Stretch Assignment will be responsible for:
  • Supporting the establishment of a Child Rights Centre at the University of The Gambia.

Duration
This stretch assignment will be for a period of three (3) to four (4) months.

Minimum Qualifications and Competencies

  • An Advanced University degree in international development, human rights, psychology, sociology, international law and other social science field is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in social development planning and management in child protection and/other related areas at the international level some of which preferably were served in a developing country is required.
  • Relevant experience in Child Rights Experience in leading Child Rights related advocacy is an important asset.
  • Experience in both development and humanitarian contexts is an added advantage.
  • Fluency in English is required.

Funding arrangement
This is a temporary development opportunity and there will be no changes to the staff member’s status (position number, level, etc.).

The Office will cover the ticket for economy class travel and 100% of the UN DSA rate during the first 30 days, and 50% DSA for the remaining time.
