 In the 1970s UNICEF established presence in Yemen to respond to the urgent needs of children in the poorest country in the Middle East. In 1991, Yemen ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and it was enacted immediately.  Since then the country has been making steady progress for children until it plunged into a brutal conflict in 2015 but even before that, Yemen needed large amounts of humanitarian assistance.

In collaboration with local authorities, non-governmental organizations and community partners, UNICEF is working in all the governorates in Yemen to respond to the needs of children throughout the country with a continuum of services to help children survive and grow to their full potential through the following programmes: Health, Nutrition, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Basic Education, and Child protection.

How can you make a difference? 

As a WASH Cluster Coordinator_P4, you are expected to provide leadership and facilitate the processes that will ensure a well-coordinated, strategic, adequate, coherent, and effective response by participants at the country level for the WASH Cluster in Yemen.

Your key tasks and responsibilities will include the following:

  • Supporting service delivery.
  • Informing strategic decision-making of the HC/HCT for the humanitarian response.
  • Planning and implementing cluster strategies.
  • Monitoring and evaluation of performance.
  • Building national capacity in preparedness and contingency planning.
  • Advocacy.
  • Accountability to affected populations.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Minimum requirements:

  • Education:

Advanced university degree in one of the disciplines relevant to the following areas: Preferably Civil Engineering or Sanitation Engineering with secondary knowledge of Mechanical Engineering, Hydrology, public health, or a field relevant to international WASH-related development assistance

  • Work Experience:

At least 8 years of progressively responsible professional work experience in the UN or other international development organizations, national government, or the private sector, including programme management and/or coordination in the first phase of a major emergency response relevant to the cluster

  • Language Requirements:

Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

Desirables:

  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergencies.
  • Formal training in cluster coordination is an advantage

UNICEF appointments are subject to medical clearance.  Issuance of a visa by the host country of the duty station is required for IP positions and will be facilitated by UNICEF. Should you be selected for a position with UNICEF, you either must be inoculated as required or receive a medical exemption from the relevant department of the UN. Otherwise, the selection will be canceled.
